Just a heads up if you're going to refuse a car with more than 2 miles. I have never seen a car come off of the truck, as in the truck that delivers it to the dealership, with less than 3 miles. It then needs to be PDI'ed during which the technicians are required (by mercedes) to put 3-4 miles on it to assure quality.

A little OT but it is tangentially related...Back in 2005 I had one of my window regulators go bad so I brought it in the dealership for replacement. I get it back and it had 27 miles more on the odometer than when I left it...I always note the odometer mileage whenever I leave it with a mechanic.

I was a bit perturbed to say the least...My SA was speechless because how can anyone justify 27 mile test drive on a problem that doesn't involve the engine, transmission, or suspension? All I got was an apology from the service manager and general manager and a deal that they would pay for another year of Onstar. I told them fine I wanted it in writing and that I would have to rethink if I would ever use their dealership again for service and to expect a letter sent to MB.

Guess what my answers to the telephone survey you get after service...

Bottomline, ALWAYS know the mileage on your car when you leave it with anyone AND let them know you know.

Slightly a joke about the 2 miles but each car I've purchased new have had less than 8 on them.

I've never seen a 'new' car (post PDI) with more than 10-15 miles on them.

Bless my dealership. THe car I got was a spec car. I found out about it a day before I bought it - and it's the only car they are receiving for the 09 model year that's not sold.

The manager REALLY didn't want to let me drive it. The only reason I got to was that my rep convinced him that I would respect that motor. Of course now reading this, it's the tranny not motor I was to respect... in any case, I drove it very gently - well within the spec of the breakin.

When I drove it off the lot it was 7 miles, I had it for 2 miles and then signed the paperwork.

I guess there are some dealers that are worthy of respect.

So can you dig up something from MB that requires a technician to drive an AMG for any distance after it's left the factory? Seriously, this may seem trivial to you, but it's in direct contradiction to what the AMG folks are saying.

3 or 4 miles coming off the truck would be something I'd not argue about, but 20-40 is an absolute joke?!

I do not understand what the fuss is about.

If the factory needed to have car driven at PDI to verify it and give it all clear, than this is what need it to be done.

10-40 miles is very common.

Go the dealers lot and look at the cars themselves.

i sell new mb cars and the reasons why your car might have som miles on it are:

it was driven by the staff- hey we like new cars too. never on a sold order, but a floor stock car, sure.

it was driven by a client with a salesman on a demo.

it was fuelled, tinted, new wheels etc

it was driven as part of a pd.

but if your car is a pre sold order, then the only reasons are the last 2.

My car came with 12 Miles on it from memory.

From the couple of factory collections i have done i recall that part of the production processs is that a pre determined % of cars are randomly driven round the test track for a full test and that all cars gp round at least once for verification.

My local dealer has a pre-assigned PDI route to avoid the mechanics going off on a jolly.

I think you should ask the dealer why the mileage?

It would appear that in the States your dealers let customers drive brand new cars such as RJR who refused the car because of the seats, hence he added 20 miles and said he didnt want it.

In the UK i dont think a dealer would let you drive a brand new unregistered car unless it was a base model definately not an AMG as they would run into the same problems that you are raising here.

Good luck and stick to your guns.

AMG engines are broken in on the bench at the factory, and your car should be delivered with almost no mileage. The first 1k miles are yours to break in the transmission.

If you really want to roast him, give MBUSA a shout and tell 'em your story. Seriously, this is an absolute farce.

Sounds like the sales joc is doing his own delivery from a dealer swap for your sale.

use the following formula when calculating the sales price;

speedo = >3 then, Sales price= (MSRP x .90)

In Puerto Rico we normally get cars with 50 to 70 miles on them. I have never had any problem or complaints.

20 miles or less

Seems right. While there is testing, etc... it shouldnt add up to 40 miles, that seems excessive. If I think back to cars I bought new... E46 M3, B7 RS4, etc..they all came with less than 20k miles on the clock.

(I don't live very far from London's premier AMG dealer - http://www.mercedes-benzbromley.co.uk )
AMG Does not break every engine in on a dyno. Every 6.3 and 5.5 is dry run as a final test but this is not a dyno run as it does not actually fire the engine Random engines are pulled from assembly and tested on the dyno to ensure performance.

Only the 65 biturbo V12's are all run on the dyno.

Then again who cares, this is done before it is put in the car.

Every AMG I have bought has had between 9 and 21 miles at delivery. My dealer puts about 3 miles on between PDI and getting fuel for delivery.

Ditto. I picked up my 32 on day after getting some warranty work done and noticed a ding in the bumper that wasn't there when I brought it in. I handed the keys to my SA and told him to call me when its fixed -- I also noted the mileage. Got it back and there was some 30 miles on it. The autobody shop was 3 miles away. My question to him was how do you account for the additional 25 miles on the car? Never got an answer out of him.

Sounds like you have a salesman that is eager to test drive your C63 and IMHO was telling you that they are going to be doing so. I can see 10-15 miles on the odometer but 20-40 is a little too many for my liking.

I've worked at a Mercedes Dealership.

The cars would usually be left at the train station and then driven from said station to the dealership, about 15km's. Some cars would be brought to a second warehouse for whatever reason, which would add another 5 km to the odo.

So usually cars would have 15-20 km on them. This had absolutely nothing to do with test drives or anything of that nature.

Depending on the method of shipment and distances they may be driven to the dealership instead of driven by truck directly to the lot.

22 miles on my C63. I think that's ok for "C63 2008" IMO if you're getting
'09 you'd get around 10-20 miles.

Just kidding, you should seriously put in a further inquiry about this with the Sales Manager... I have bought many new cars, and that is way too high. Straight up. There are other threads out there about this very same subject (on many different forums). Those are additional points of reference which I am basing this conclusion on and would recommend for you to take a look at.

Good luck.

If you are paying MSRP, make sure it's a place that you are comfortable with! Sounds really iffy to me.
