What's the big excitement about alcantera? It's a synthetic suede... read: plastic cloth made to feel like leather.
It's upside is for racing applications... steering: cloth/suede palm gloves don't skid and seats.. bottom won't slide around.
It doesn't hold up to stains very well, it is - well - synthetic vinyl but everyone is beating down the doors to get it.
