Fragile Rear View Mirrors?

Has anyone experienced cracking of the clear plastic covers on their mirrors?
I justgot back for a 3800 mile trip to Montreal and back to Dallas. Both mirrors are damaged, the drivers side (below) being the worst.
The dealer wants $69 each plus minimum 30 minutes labor for each mirror covers. Anyone change these themselves? Is it easy to do?
Picture below (please excuse the bugs, pic taken before wash!! LOL)

Sorry about the mirrors but I gotta ask what kind of speeds did you drive and what mileage did you get on your trip?

Driving most of the way with cruise control set between 75-80 MPH for most of the way. On board computer showed that I averaged 20.7 MPG from the start of the trip...... so not too shabby. I also enjoyed a bit of spirited driving once in Montreal. LOL

Thats pretty good MPG for that monster.By the way,I was at MB military sales here in Germany today and saw a black CLS 550 with the new mirrors and I must say thatthey look much better in real life than in pictures and much more stable than the now older one's.

I think if you would have had clear bra installed on the mirrors you might have save your self some damage. I did before I went on any long trips.
