Has anyone managed to get to the bottom of this yet?
When i collected my car i was given a small 2.5ltr Mobil 1 0-40w container of oil and told that its not uncommon for the cars to need a top up during or just after the run in period.
I have checked with the local dealer and the service department and they told me 0-40w is the recommend viscosity.
I am UK based so just wondered if anyone has heard any differently?

I had been reading the whole post and the reason i asked the question was that 05-40w was for everyone outside the USA but i had only called my dealer last week and they told me 0-40w.
I think as mentioned its probably lazyness on the dealers part, i will ask them to double check for me
Thanks

Gentlemen:
Without going into great detail about oils, your engine or even a lab would have a VERY dificult time distinguishing between 0-40 and 5-40 weight synthetic oils. You will NOT do ANY damage to your engine or warrenty using either one here. The ONLY difference would be IF the oil SPEC was different, NOT weight, aka the additive package is what I am talking about here guys. My ex crew cheif worked for a research lab on oils, and I will gladly wager anything you like on this one. Oh well, read the label, and if they are the same spec whcih they should be, you will be just fine.
See yeah
PS: USE SEARCH ON THIS TOPIC PLEASE, as it has been discussed in GREAT depth on this site.

As far as I know, there are three oils that meet these requirements:https://mbworld.org/forums/3202814-post16.html

I just got my report back from Blackstone Laboratories and the dealer is using 5w30 in my engine. When I asked my tech via text he said thats what they have on tap. Suggestions? Recommendations?

I bought a filter at the dealer today. He tried to sell me MB Performance oil. He says it’s new for AMG’s.
Its made by Mobil. I’ll stick with M1 0w-40.

I believe MB recently moved to an MB branded oil at the dealers, and it's unclear which brand. In any event, only 229.5 spec oil in 0W-40 or 5W-40 should be used.

Joe

MB oil is made to MB specs. Just because it’s made by someone who also makes some other brand of oil doesn’t mean they are of the same quality.

Yes... two. (1) Show the idiots at the dealership that only 0W-40 and 5W-40 oils are allowed in the M156 motor and get them to flush that crap out of the engine ASAP (including the oil cooler) and replace with a proper 0W-40 or 5W-40 grade oil at their cost while you watch and make sure that they do it right, and furthermore get them to admit IN WRITING that they put in an unapproved thinner oil which may have already caused some damage and excessive wear to your motor so that if 5h!t happens and you're looking at $50K bill for an engine rebuild you at least have the possibility of a recourse. (2) Find another dealership or indie shop to service your car going forward.
