Serious Question: If 275/35/18 fits in the rear, why did MB go 255?
#27
confused
Its time for me to replace the rear tires--- I use the car for a daily driver/street racer and I'd like to the wider tires on the rear but not risk the rear tire separating or ballooning.
What size should I put on the 18" factory rim?
Thanks
Paul

Well, I have 33" 285s on my truck w/ 7.5" rims (much higher AR though) but that's within spec and not going to the track anytime soon.
My illustration of 285 was what would fit on the rim, not what I'd put on there. As regards 265, it would vary rim-to-rim how well it would hold.

Wasn't trying to bust your stones my friend.
Just wanted to point out to newer car junkies, that it wasn't a good idea for a novice. I too have done MANY out of the box thoughts, but they are best kept to the track or an experienced driver. Hope you understand my attitude.
See yeah

multiple people have said "post pictures of the 275/35/18 in the back".
I guess I could do so, but I don't really know what you people are looking for. It doesn't look any different to me than stock honestly... Are you want a front shot, a tread shot, a clearance shot under the car, or what...
If you are concerned if it fits... IT DOES. And it doesn't rub.

I went 265 on my 2nd set and have had zero problems. OD is almost the same and its a little more grip. Hard corning has been fine. I'm with overbudget on the 275's. I'm not sure how a pic will help and I may give them a try as I'm almost ready for another set.
I'm only worried about the OD changing the odometer and my racking up additional miles on the lease... I drive a lot of highway miles for work...

Going wider is not always better, I went from a 245 (stock rear on C55) to a 255 and then on my next dyno run I was down 9whp. If you go wider and make the jump from 255 to even 265 or 275 you doing to loose some driveline power. Wider tires weigh more and that weight gain is in one of the worst spots, on the outside part of the wheel. Just something to thing about...

265= tire width M/T= Micky Thompson
M/T As far as I know does not make a 18inch tire with a 35 side wall, If you go out of spec with the side wall like 40 or 45 side wall for daily use it will throw things off, what these things are I'm not sure but its not good.

...putting a bigger tire on the rear would actually lower your odometer readings. For each revolution of the trans (where the odometer measures) the car goes further with a larger diameter tire. Another excuse for a 275/35?
PS anyone know if the increased diameter tire would negatively affect the torque?

I've really been trying to follow these threads on tire widths. Like many, I'm frustrated with the wheel spin.
I'm slow in digesting all of these posts and from what I gather, there are many professional and non-professional opinions on what to do.
What to do, what to do....

I have mentioned this before. But 265 35 18 on OEM wheels rub on the lower back part of my wheel wells. This happens only at the track. With 54 offset, it is really tight inboard. Not sure why I am the only one having this problem. I am assuming it is happening during heavy compression coming out of right hand turns. Have a deep grove in the wheel well cover. It happened with both Pirellis and Dunlop Direzzas. Maybe I had a rear alignment issue, but dealer said alignment was fine. Do not have the issue with Kleeman wheels and Tirerack Sport Tech. Both have less offset. When the dealer had the car up in the air we looked and it was extremely tight on the inside with 265s.

First, look at other tired threads, there is a ton of pics of the various sizes and makes on stock and aftermarket rims.
Second, to eliminate wheel spin?? May I suggest Ford Pinto, Vega or some thing like that. AMG's have torque and hard to not find anything that will eliminate wheel spin. To eliminate wheel spin will require throttle control and just time to learn to handle. I have 275/35R-18 rears on stock rims, Goodyear all season. 245/40R-18 on stock rims up front. Fronts I get a lot of miles out of them. Rears I got last set over 13,000 miles one the set. You can spin those tires if you really hammer it but overall they stick so well, much better than stock or stock width tires. I am not a track expert, but I do very very aggressive driving and NEVER had a rub inside or out and have ran with two in rear, with lots of bags for trips and never had issues. Could post more pics but look around you will find all you are looking for.
Go wide, you will get better traction less wheel spin but never eliminate it.
Be safe.

"gas mileage" should be part of the reason, since I installed the wider tires for three days, my aveage gas mileage from 18L/100km up to 20L/100km
