On Pole Motorsports Project C63

I would like to introduce you to our newest shop project car, a 2009 C63. The car was purchased brand new with the intention of using it to install and test parts, as a reliable daily driver, and as a casual track day toy. Members of our staff all enjoy time at the track, with various backgrounds in motorsports, but we like fast street cars too

Here are some pictures of the car the day after it was purchased. The mods have already begun, so we will post updates as new parts go on.

Thanks for the welcome The mods have begun so here's a small update. First up is a Carbonio carbon fiber airbox. This piece is very well made and should help make a bit of power.

We also added a subtle carbon fiber deck lid spoiler. Trying to keep things low key

We have also done a few other things under the hood, I'll post another update once we have a chance to take some more photos.

CF airbox looks great! Would be cool to add an AMG logo to it, but might be hard to do.

Good job!

Is Jon Winter one of the guys involved with this shop?

If so I remember him back from his C32 days. He was one of the few guys who really took the C32 out for some road racing!

Would be curious to see what he says about the car.

The easiest thing to do would be to get a pair of the AMG trunk badges but I'm just not sure if they would look tacked on and out of place. We'll look into it though

Yes, Jon is the founder and owner of On Pole. He has been in the Mercedes game for a long time, and this is the car he drives on a daily basis. I'll ask him to chime in here and give his impressions.

Yes
Do you guys have access to a dyno?

It would be great to see mods validated one by one. Stock vs CF Airbox. CF Airbox vs CF & exhaust, etc.

Jon is a great guy and for anyone looking to take the C63 to the track Jon will be the one to show them how to prep the car. Look forward to seeing his thoughts and seeing what he chooses to do with the car!

Jon and I started back before the Vw days in the mid eighties. We originally met when a friend of his saw an add in the paper for some used GTi wheels . Our journey of modifying and tracking our cars started even before then. Jon started tracking his Scirroco 2 years before me and one day we met again while driving home in the winter on the hot tire of the era, Yoko 008 RSII's. It was slushy out and Jon was strapped into a Sparco Evo seat and I in my Recaro seat in my 16 Jetta with a G60 conversion. I remember as I struggled to get along side this person to see who ELSE would be so crazy to be driving on track tires in the middle of the winter. As I passed him, we looked at each others cars pulled over and talked cars in the snow! As the years went on we started tracking these cars more and I can tell many of stories of passing experienced drivers on the track that could NOT match the speed of a well driven 110whp VW !! ( with my extra weight in the car at that).

Vw's led to Porsche 944 turbo's and many podiums in SCCA, NASA, and a ride in the then Speedvision Touring Car series on our home turf right here in DC back in 2001.

Since then I have sold my 944 turbo. Jon bought, modded, tracked and sold his C32( Fikse wheels, Bilsteins, Renntech list, 390mm 6 piston Brembos). Jon instructs for Ferrari Club and many other clubs I raced in the Panoz Series in 2007 with 2 podiums. Somehow we cant seem to stop finding project cars and reasons to go to the track!!

Early 2007 Jon picked up a 996 GT3 and picked up where he left off in his 944 turbo. ( BBS, Moton, GT3 cup gears, Motorsports clutch) basically raided the Cupcar bin !!

THe latest project is the C63 and this we are proud of as its reunion of sorts with the brand that I grew up with and for Jon a faster, newer C32 replacement.

So we are drivers and instructors first and motorsports is in our blood. We know not everyone tracks their cars, but building upon the driver is just as important as the car itself.

Notice any difference in sound with the CF airbox? I wouldn't imagine there would be, but who knows?

Car sounds somewhat louder but that could just be my imagination. Since installing the Carbonio CF airboxes I notice much better throttle response, for sure!! and to they look great to boot.... I have been very pleased with this investment.

I have a question, what sort of brake pads would you swap in for the car if you plan on using it as a weekend track toy.

Depends...if you are a newb...I wouldnt. I would focus on the basics and maybe on my second event do a better pad depending on your progress. I WOULD upgrade the brake fluid. I would limit throttle input and not focus on flying down the straights. Instead work on looking were you want to go, hand position and your situational awareness of other cars and what your car is doing. Those basics are the foundation, build upon that and you will have alot of fun.

Thanks for the tips! I've only done 1 track day so far and I still managed to cooked the brake fluid even thought i was using ATE-Super Blue. This was done on a stock 2007 miata with stock pads. Weird the fluid boiled yet there was no pad fade.
