Manual Downshifting ?

I like using the manual downshifting on my car, but find it is only effective when you are not trying to push it. Here's why. If you are on the highway in sport mode (likely 7th gear) and want to punch it, the car will typically downshift automatically to 3rd or 4th gear - awesome.

If I am in manual mode and 6th gear on the highway, and want to push it, I run into problems. Ideally, I want to downshift to 4th usually. But, if you click the downshift lever twice quickly you only get one downshift to 5th. You have to wait about 1 second to then downshift again to 4th - slow. Or if you pull and hold the downshift lever it does downshift all the way to 3rd usually - but usually I don't want quite this much of a downshift.

Anyone have a trick to allow you to quickly be able to downshift two gears quickly and easily? I had a evolution MR for a few months before this car, and with that if you clicked the lever twice quickly you got a two gear downchange, but not with the Merc.

If you hold the downshift paddle for a few seconds, the tranny will automatically shift down to the safest gear/speed ratio, so if in seventh gear and want to pass, hold the downshift until it finds the proper gear for that speed, it will probably shift down to third or fourth gears automatically, then step on it, you'll pass in a heartbeat! Go out and try it.

You already know the two options try downshifting quickly by clicking, or hold it down to grab the lowest possible gear.

Thanks everyone. My question is whether people find that if they try to downshift say 2 gears by very quickly clicking the downshift lever twice, that the transmission only will change 1 gear. It seems I need to have a one second delay between clicks to have it downshift twice.

Double Downshift - paging Andy MHP

Andy, can this issue be resolved completely through your TCU tuning or just reduced somewhat?
