Dyno results
Hi all. I just got back from the dyno today. I'll try to scan the print outs next week.
Location: Auto Service & Performance by Ed
Dyno: PowerDyne
Date: 3/19/2009
Settings: ESP off, M-mode, 4th gear (no dyno mode as I did not learn how to do that in time)
Max HP: 389
Max Torque: 379
The Max HP with 24% drivetrain + dyno loss is 512 HP at the crank. This is a tad shy of the 530 crank HP I expected from the tune and headers/cats.
However, the A/F Ratio goes from about 15 at 2600 RPM to about 11 at 7,000 RPM. It's a pretty steady drop from the graph. So it's running a bit rich at higher RPMs, so I imagine if the tune was leaned out a bit, I'd see close to the expected 530 crank HP.
So my impression from the Kleemann tune is that it brought close to the gains they claimed. Perhaps not being in dyno mode, and only have 5,000 miles on the car is where the apx. 18 crank hp difference lies. As far as I'm concerned, the dyno numbers meet Kleemann's claims given those parameters.
Plus, having the engine run rich at the higher RPMs makes for a cooler running engine, so I'm really not interested in leaning out the car much more (if at all).
Again, the sound & rush from this tune is well worth the $. I'm still very much a happy Kleemann customer.

Eh, everyone else is using 18%. That would only put your car at a little over 470 hp??? 389 whp is not that much more than stock #s others have been putting down. Perhaps not being in dyno mode really hurt your numbers?

Well, comments certainly welcome, especially if someone has very good experience with dyno runs with and without dyno mode.
Thanks for those who posted how to put in dyno mode. Maybe it's back to the shop?

Mine dynoed at 436 rwhp with the same mods as Taylor's. Obviously an example of how dynos can differ rather than proof that having your parts installed by a Mercedes dealer with a performance center can result in better performance.

So, 389 rwhp should be approximately 474 bhp, or +23 crank hp from stock. If you have a stock baseline dyno, you'll have more useful data for analysis - but frankly, as long as you're satisfied, that's all that matters

How do you like your 997. I'm picking up mine tomorrow.
BTW., my installer had worked as a senior technician at MB for a long time.

Taylor,
I watched the vid's - sweet sounding ride and it looks fast too. Thanks for posting. The downshift blip is da bomb and with the mods you made it is easier to hear. Luv it. Have you done any comparative timing before/after mods? i.e. 0-60 mph times, 0-100, 1/4mi? Just curious.
When the W204 first hit the market, I hated it but it is really starting to grow on me.
I'm up in Pittsburgh all the time for work realted stuff. Do the AMG guys in that region ever get together? OH?PA/WV, etc. I heard that MBCA is having a national event there this summer including a track day at Beaver Creek.

Ya, I'm sure you are probably getting close to the Kleeman advertised numbers. Just based on a comment by another member in another thread...I think it all boils down to not being in dyno mode. I think someone said they dynoed almost 75 hp less when not in dyno mode.

I would like to see someone post a clear pick of the "dyno mode" menu. I think we have a lemming hunt underway.

P and C unite
All:
Here are a few pics of my C63 and 997 2S (the latter I picked up today). My C63 is the DD and my 997 is, well, not sure how to classify--toy I guess. My modded C63 destroys the 997, so ironic to me--the quintessential sports car gets dominated by a 4-door C class.

Dyno
All:
As promised, attached is the dyno sheet. Unfortunately, I don't have a pre/post dyno run, and this is on a Mustang dyno, which I'm told posts lower numbers than what most people seems to be running (Dynojet). I also recall the fan in the front of the car was modest (like a standard room fan), so the windspeed was not well replicated.
A 24% factor has been verified through my local dyno guy as a reasonable conversion to crank HP. So this bring my crank hp up to 512, though again, it's hard to really say without a pre and post run on this Mustang dyno, or another run on a Dynojet. Plus, that 512 may be closer to 520 if the fan had been appropriate for my run.
Considering I'm more than happy with the peformance of the Kleemann tune based on how it drives and sounds, I'm not concerned with the numbers.
So thanks again to Kleemann, as this tune fits my style quite well.

All due respect to the dyno operator, I've never heard a Mustang dyno operator call for a 24% driveline loss on any MB. In addition, I've heard the 7-speed typically has less loss than the 5-speed trannys. IMHO, dyno guys tend to "juice" their conversation estimates a bit to make for happier customers... you can take some things they say with a modest helping of NaCl. Do you ever frequent the track? E/T's and MPH would be excellent indicators of how powerful your car has become. Alternatively, as you mention, you could dyno on a local DJ in 5th gear and see what the results are (my vote would be track - it's more fun ).
In the end, your statement of "I'm happy with the way it drives and sounds" is what's important. Glad you're satisfied! Car's quite a beast I'm sure
