Wait until we get some longevity reports on the replacement brands then we'll know if the problem is the tire or the car.

C63 09' LSD traded for 2010 GT-R
I suspect it is the Pirelli compound.

I switched to C mode around town to try and get a bit better life out of the rears (Toyo T1R's) we will see.

I also beleive the immediate delivery of torque from this motor is part of the "problem" with tire life.

Not many cars deliver so much torque right away as on this car, the e-throttle could also be a factor.

The 800+hp M3 Turbo in my garage does not have tire ripping torque till you reach 3,000+rpm. So around town it is relatively easy on tires.

Peak torque is at about 6200.

That said, the final drive ratio also matters because it acts as a torque multiplier. I have 4.30 gears, so the torque multiplication is significant.

Put it this way, with 315 Nitto drag radials, I can blow the tires off at will from a roll in the first 3 gears (4th as well if its under 40 degrees)

true, but the 6.2l only makes 360lb ft of torque at 2200 rpm when you are at WOT, which is pretty rare unless you are on it all the time.

that's impressive to say the least. I'm at 5,370 (roughly) and I parked the beast, only pulling it out on the weekends until i get my new Goodyear Eagle F1's installed.

I got 6,200 miles out of my rears and I never once did a burnout.

I ordered Sumitomo HRIII or ZRIII (can't remember). They were the cheapest 275/35/18 from Tire Rack. I figured if I am not tracking the car, and the tires are basically disposable every 5-10k, then I'm just going functional.

I do have a new set of 20" wheels being built though and 20" tires are much more expensive (unfortunately).

Give us an update on how long those new tires last. I'm leaning toward something less expensive on the next set.

That's amazing, although I don't think anyone is talking about actually seeing cords - that would definitely be a defective product or abuse if you were seeing cords at 3000-8000 miles. For me it was just that the wear bars were flush with the tread surface at about 2800 miles.

What I like!
tyanger, 2800 miles to the wear bars is pretty quick. I do wonder if it has to do with the stock tread compound.

Maybe running r-compounds on the track til they cord has tainted me. Wear bars? More surface area for better grip! Cords? Time to quit and drive home! (*YMMV, do not attempt, tested on a closed course with cheap bastid driver)

I had them on my crossfire, put 5000 miles on them, plus one Auto-x Event and they look like this

Decent tire and still have pretty good tread, but they just weren't sticky enough for me. So I stepped up to the new Nitto- Nt05 and I am very happy with their all around performance. I went to the strip last Sunday, didn't even check my tire pressure after a 150mile drive and ran several low 12's. As far as longevity we'll just have to wait and see. They are not that expensive for a sticky tire and I think one of your fellow C63's ran 11.4@120 on a 275/35/18.

There's still some tread left....my rears looked like that at 4500 miles and I drove for another 1000...well none in the rain though

How did you like the Sumitomo's? TireRack's review of them is very favorable. I would normally opt for a stickier tire, but I think my track days are behind me - at least until the kids get older and I can get back into an actual sports car and not a highway missile.

Why did you chose 275 over the OEM 255 or 265?

I went 275's to try and get as much power to the pavement!!!

I can't tell a difference between the Sumitomo's and the original tires (except the cost!)

Overbudget, is it possible to post a picture of your tires. I ordered 275 and now I am worried they won't look OK on the car.

Thank you

George

I just changed my rear tires for the first time yesterday; I only have 6000 miles... MB wanted to charge me like $750 for 2 rear tires

I went with Yokohama S-Drives in the rear instead of the Pirelli’s, I’m only going to smoke em in another 5-6k anyway so w/e...

My guy at the dealership said 63's never go more than 10,000 miles on their rear tires...(unless you drive like an absolute biatch )

How are you going to buy this car and not do at least one burnout, I have LSD too so I love powersliding or wiping the back of my car around turns... so FUN!

Worth every penny

Hey George, How is everything? Dont forget to post your impressions of the wider tires like the fitment, hooking up etc. Hopefully we'll get to see each other again at another one of the AMG events!

Hey Nick, everything is OK, very happy with the car. I will give you guys a review on the tires in the coming week. I am sure we will get to see each other again at an AMG event.

I installed the 275/35/18 rear 245/40/18 front. I just drove on them 50 km today and I already like them alot more than the originals. I will give you a more detailed review next week.

George
