"Check Engine Oil Level At Next Refueling" - WTF!!!!

Okay, so I've been getting this message for the past week or so, repeatedly. The first time I got it, I figured it was just a reminder by the **** ECM. So I checked my oil...and it appeared to be at an okay level and had good color to it (it was all thw way up to the second little red marker, which I believe indicated max fill level; although there is some third red plastic marker on the dipstick unliek any other mercedes...odd (can someone clear that up for me)?

I hit okay to clear out the message, but I still keep getting it. What gives??Is there another way I have to clear it? Is it a sensor problem or is it just a "complimentary" check your oil level light?

When I get this message(twice), I have added about 1/4 to 1/2 litre of the recomended oil and the message will dissappear, these motors eat oil like crazy, so it is not unusual to get this message, it is somewhat common. No need to panic.

Since when should a brand new, had built motor be eating oil? I've got 4000 miles on the car...it shouldn't be slurping on oil like an old cutlass.

The dipstick indicates it's full. So is this message based on oil level or is it just an automatic, periodic message the ecm spits out?

I thought I read that the the oil level is MAX at the third red marker. Meaning try to keep the level in that narrow gap between marker two and marker three. (Is this right?)

Mine has eaten it's fair share of oil as well...

I'm at 5000 miles and have not had to add any oil and have not gotten any check oil lights. I do drive my car hard occasionally, but not every day. (I went through my rear tires in 2800 miles.) So my C63 does not 'eat oil like crazy'

Mine constantly gave me this warning. The SA at the dealer told me these AMG engines eat about a quart every couple thousand miles. Nothing to worry about.

I made this mistake too. I got the warning at apprx 4000 miles, even took it in for its first service around the same time. The dispstick was a bit confusing to me too since it had 3 red markers. Oil level was right at the middle marker, dealer didn't fill it up, so I figured the middle marker was full. Needless to say the warning came back...added a quart of oil, oil lvl went up to the top red marker, and no warning since.

They have the motor set up for power not for minimum oil consumption.

Its totally normal and it tends to go away after 10k miles after the motor has fully broken in and seated the seals and rings completely.

Nothing to worry about.

You will like see blue smoke on start up as well at some point and that too is totally normal. That will go away too!

When i have my porsche i have to add engine oil nearly every 2000 KM ...i have learnt from a tech that if u punch the car hard very often u will burnt the engine oil more than normal and especailly for sports car their engine setup is totally different from the normal sedan. Which engine oil did u guys put into the Benz? Mobile 1? I was thinking to put in Motul.

Has anyone purchased Mobil 1 5w-40 from the dealership since our cars don't use 0w-40 anymore? what are people doing when the check engine oil level light comes on? I've been putting in the 0w-40 but i've only put in 1 quart and i have 3300 miles.

I'm adding 0w-40 Mobil1. I've done it twice now.

I don't recall the exact size, but the oil filter uses a standard metric socket to remove the cap and then you replace the filter unit that sits inside. It is a very easy filter change.

Take it to the dealer. There is a TSB to replace oil level indicators that are giving off false positives. I had mine replaced a week or two ago.

First time the "check engine oil..." warning came on, my car was at about 7,200 km. I checked the dipstick and duly added 2 litres of 0W-40 Mobil 1. I noticed it wasn't running as silky smooth at that time, but with the added motor oil, it made a big difference. Funny how you don't really notice the change in how smooth the engine runs until you replenish the oil.

So can anyone confirm that the oil should be at the top (third) red marker on the dipstick, not at the middle of the three (second one up) like most other mercedes?

So can I put in 5W-40?

a modern engine making only 500bhp should not be burning any appreciable amount of oil. Also, it doesn't take 10k miles to seat rings.

I understand that they set the ring gaps looser in these motors due to the higher cylinder pressures (and subsequently higher heat), but at only 80bhp/L, we are not talking about a super stressed or high compression engine).

AMG/MB can tell you its normal all they want, but it really isn't.


Also, porsches tend to burn a bit more oil than other cars because of the boxer engine layout.

"Normal" means intentionally designed in given the limitations of the materials used and the desired product...so I'll trust the designers thank you

I'm not sure if it's really "normal"? I think the SA expect it, so they "guess" that it's normal? I change my oil every 5,000 miles instead of 10,000 but I've never ever had this problem or this warning message to add oil And yes, I do drive the car hard at times and have taken it to the road course and different drag strips a few times. Also, a friend of mine with an S63 actually keeps his oil for the 10,000 miles interval recommended by Mercedes, and he has never had that message either?

I've been hearing that some 63 engines required adding oil while others havent'. Very interesting......

Your post makes no sense. No manufacturer would ever want one of their engines to "intentionally" burn oil. Oil in the combustion chamber does you no favors, and actually lowers the octane of the fuel once they both end up in the chamber.

Don't give me the limitations of the materials bit. Its a standard engine, there is no magic to either the pistons, the walls, or the rings.

Most high performance engines burn a little oil due to larger ring gaps or a slightly less than perfect PCV system. But a completely stock $40,000 engine from a top manufacturer burning a quart every 2-3k miles miles is a bit excessive in my opinion. It may be normal, but that doesn't make it good or correct.

Not intentional, no, not in the sense that the engine would be designed to burn oil I think we all agree it's designed to burn gas. Intentional, yes , in the sense that the designers view some burning of oil as acceptable given the overall package.
