Oil Temp 258?
Hey all. I know our cars run hot--though today my oil temp hit 258 (F) after about 20 minutes of hard driving. Ambient temp 65 degrees, and had in manual mode running high revs. Anyone else hit this number (or greater)? Of course I cooled it down with engine running before turning it off. Oil level OK.

when you see 290+ thats when you should start backing out of it. I doubt these cars will get past 280 even when at the track being flogged for 1 hr straight.
MB tends to use decent oil coolers.

I've seen a peak oil temp of 145C/295F during a AMG drive day, all the 63's there were at those temps but it was understandable seeing all the cars had been going for about 6hrs straight and it was a 38C/100F day........having said that all the oil cooler fans were going nuts! Quite understandable seeing they kept stopping in the pits and sat for a few mins every few laps.
The oil cooler fan on the 2nd (yes, 2nd) oil cooler on a C63 doesn't even turn on until the oil temp reachs approx 120C/250F. Nothing to worry about!

If you were to track a C63 to around 300 degrees for the oil I would say buy an upgraded oil cooler to be safe. I bet the ecu starts cutting back power at those temps.

Car goes into limp mode at 295. Car has inadequate oil cooling for track use on a hot day. I did one 15 minute track session last summer (95 degree day) and hit 295 oil temp. Car went into limp mode. No subsequent issues but made me lose all enthusiasm for tracking the car. Despite some opinions that it's not a big problem, I dont want to subject my daily driver to this on a regular basis.

The oil temps were only getting that high due to the repeated time stationary between long full load runs. You'd never stop bring the car back to the pit directly after a full speed run, you'd always do a cool down lap first. I must admit though, even with the significantly larger oil coolers of the M156 engine vehicles in comparison to M113 engine AMG's, the 63 engines have quite high oil temps. Very high rpms and much more substantial piston oil jets explain the higher oil temps though.

If it got that high during continous running then I would be checking that the oil cooler fan is working correctly. Do you use Mobil 1 or equivilant oil? Some oils will cause a higher temp than normal.
The high temps I saw were caused by a specific combination of driving conditions, just doing a track day when it's hot shouldn't be getting the engine to the point of going to limp mode.
I'd be asking your dealer next visit, this car should be able to do track days with ease.
