Lapping the 63
I ran a track day yesturday and thought I would share my impressions. My car is an 09 with the performance package. I have the Kleemann ecu tune and was running toyo RA1 R compound tires (245 front and 275 rear).
The accelaration is phenominal! The car is heavy but handles very nicely with understeer at the limit in slower corners. I ran all my sessions with esp fully off. This track has lots of right hand turns so the left front tire took a real beating! The car could definitely use some additional negative camber up front.
Oil temps never got above 253 but it was a cool day. The brakes held up well but a more aggresive track pad would help to provide more initial bite.
I tried both the sport and manual modes. Shifting in manual mode was definitely the way to go as the sport mode would sometimes upshift and downshift at less than optimal moments.
I was able to harrass and pass some very stout machinery icluding two Ford GT's, a viper, two ferrari F430s, a supercharged Z-06, track prepped 911's and plenty of other high powered cars.
I could not be more pleased in the performance considering this is a relatively heavy 4 door sedan. Job well done Mercedes!

Do you use stock rims for those tires? or do you buy new rims just for track days? I want to get some really low tread rating R compound tires but at the same time, I don't want to waste them and sacrifice quietness and comfort on normal street driving.

I ran them on the stock rims and drive on them every day. They are a heavier tire than the stock tires and are a little bit noisier but the tradeoffs are well worth it for the increase in grip. You will not get many track days out of them if you are pushing hard!

The nut behind the wheel is the most important element. Horsepower is nice but you have to be able to use it. It is all about carrying speed in the corners and maximizing exit speed.

I was running at Summit Point. I started with 35psi cold on the front and 37 on the rears. I ended up at 46 after the first session and had to bleed them down to 40psi. Second session they were at 43 hot. I think starting pressure cold needs to be around 30 as the toyos work best around 40 hot.

Awesome report! The car really is well balanced and has power everywhere! Imagine if it were 1500... even just 500 pounds lighter... it would destroy everything out there! It is a great car, I agree... MB/AMG did it right.
BTW, what track were you on?

It's always great to hear of a boy and his toys out playing nicely with the other children in the hood...

"Did the transmission have a tendency to lock you out of downshifts when you requested them? "
The trans will make sure you have slowed down enough before it will let you go down to the next gear but it was not much of a problem. I did have to glance down occasionaly to confirm the downshift.
"Cool. Was that the Colonial Challenge event? I came within an eye-lash of signing up for that. Planning on doing a FATT soon. Thanks for info."
It was the Colonial Challenge event. Nice event with lots of great cars and not too many regulations. OPM GT3 from this board was also at the event with his modded white c63.
"If you could get some more negative camber up front, you could drop the pressure a little. My C32 had this same issue. Also drop the rears for a little more oversteer my friend, I ran 45 left front, 42 right front and 32 left rear and 30 right rear. The lower rear presure will help with the grip coming out of the corners, ESPICALLY since you have the BEST mod EVER for tracking, aka a LSD"
Grip coming out of the corners was good. I did not have much trouble putting the power down. More negative camber and some adjustable swaybars would be nice--wait this is not supposed to become a track car!
