2009 Black C63 AMG
AMG Factory in Affalterbach, Germany.
I was fortunate enough to tour the AMG complex in Affalterbach on Thursday. If you ever have the chance to tour the facility, you have to do it. It is a great way to see how much precision and attention to detail that each AMG Assembly Technician puts into his engines.
Here are some pics from the showroom floor. Unfortunately, no pics are allowed anywhere else.
I did see an SLS test mule in black camouflage driving onto the grounds and later parked inside the R&D area.
The orange SL65 AMG is a custom design for a German customer who, "doesn’t want to see any other cars that look like his". Cost: more than 400,000 Euro. The paint job alone was more than 12,000 Euro.
A former F1 safety car. Bernd Maylander, Driver.
Paul Di Resta’s DTM ride from last year. I think.
An unknown CLK racer. Parked outside the showroom.
Enjoy.

Sweet! Too bad about no pics from inside the facility. I suppose there may be "proprietary techniques and technology" so I understand. Were you able to inquire about your engine builder?
Thanks for the review. My own visit is scheduled for 9/7/09 and I cannot wait. I will be so excited, I hope I can calm down enough to retain what I see and hear.

Ursula, our tour guide did not have a name for the color. The car is a SL65 AMG Black Series.
I mentioned to our group that Mercedes Benz has painted F1 test cars a slightly different shade of orange in the past.
Perhaps the owner thought about that when he made the color choice.
One thing she made certain was that it will be a one of a kind!

You are welcome. I must say that if Ursula is your guide, I think she said she's one of seven English speaking tour guides, she will answer all your questions as best she can. Those questions she could not answer were either so technical that an engineer would have to answer, or if the question was about upcoming models/updates, she was instructed not to answer.

Your pics are much nicer. Thanks for posting. Did you get them from the Owners Forum? They sure look professional.

Yeah, Its amazing what the tuners over here do. But you need lots of cash!!! It seems that everything in Germany is 2-3 times more expensive than back home in the states. I have also been to the factory on several occasions but never took the tour.

Cool "Pics" and thanx for sharing Yes, Germany is very expensive. Hans the sales in Stuttgart informed me that MB here in Germany just started to offer extended warranties for German customers. I guess that we are indeed lucky in some areas of MB purchasing
