4.6L twin turbo for next C63?

Guys,

I just read the local Australia motor magazine, says the next E Coupe AMG will be a 4.6L twin turbo at 2011, so it looks like the next C63 might be a 4.6L Twin turbo??

Whats your thought on NA 6.2L vs a 4.6L twin turbo, in terms of life expectancy on the engine?

and 6.2L will be the last type of v8 from AMG , maybe a good collection to keep ?

2011 c63 will be another year of wait.. whereas 2010 model, i assume with most bugs fixed for 6.2L c63?

but again 2011, MCT,DI,4.6L twin turbo.... is very tempting... to wait..

Definitely the V8 is special, I am going to keep this one. I prefer to change the pistons, rod, and install a turbo to the v8 6.3 in the future

Did it say what kind of power output it will have? Indeed, the 6.2 is "special."

The 4.6L TT is a V8, correct? Sounds a bit big for a 6.

EDIT: just realized, if you chopped two cylinders off of a 6.2L 8 cylinder, you'd be left with 4.6L of displacement - sounds like one heck of a coincidence... so maybe the 6-cyl rumors are true.

It will save us gas if it was 4.2L TT
BTW I don't think it will be out for the Cs for 2011...I would say most likely 2012?

Gonna miss the big V8, but turbo brings in some easy tuning power.

+1000

true story.

What I don't understand is why AMG and M decided to go to V8s this time around and now both are saying they're taking a step back to smaller, 6-cylinder FI engines in the future. I mean I understand, sorta, FI engines, especially turbo cars are very flexible, powerful, and if running low-mid boost, dependable. However AMG and BMW created two classic, award-winning engines with their V8s, I just don't get why they aren't trying to improve on those, instead of back-pedaling to smaller displacements with turbos.

I was under the impression that the E-Class Coupe was not going to undergo the AMG setup. Could this news be a bit old?

Can someone post some examples of 4+ liter 6 cylinder engine? I can't think of one.
I think that Merc will cut the volume of a v8 and add more air to it. That set up will be something close to their AMG 55 kompressor engine. Just thoughts

hmm.. I'm not sure how the Merc turbos are as in quality.

The only two cars I recall having bi-turbo are the 65 amgs and the B-Class 200 TT

That's always a possibility too. In fact it's probably more realistic than a 6 cylinder, especially in an AMG car.

3.8L is the biggest V6 I can think of and that's in the GTR.

Nissan has a 4.0L V6 that goes in their Frontier and Pathfinders.

Toyota has a 4.0L V6 that goes in their 4Runner and Tacomas.

Ford has a long in the tooth 4.0L V6 that was used in many many vehicles including the Mustang. Mazda also used this engine.

Jeep had a 4.0L straight 6. But that isn't the same.

There are many V6 engines in the 3.5 to 3.9L range that are currently in production.

The M156 (6.2L AMG engine) is ~ 0.775L per cylinder. Since MB and AMG have used modular approaches to engine design in the past, it's entirely possible that the next engine could be the M156, less two cylinders (for a displacement of 4.6L), with the CR lowered and turbos added. Plus other goodies like DI and MCT, of course.

its 4.6L v8 DI Twin Turbo, just checked the magazine again, with 320kw for E Coupe AMG

the next model SLK AMG is also 4.6L v8 DI Twin Turbo with 300 kw instead of 320kw

There is a video out there of an SLK outfitted with an SLR motor and it is ragging an Enzo. Can't verify the engine claim but the car is insane.

Which magazine is this?

The E class was launched in SA this past week. Spoke to the chairman of Merc SA and he says that SA is getting the E63 AMG in about May next year, but AMG are NOT making an E Coupe AMG. He says that an E Coupe AMG will only be considered for design and production IF the E63 AMG Sedan sales are good. This is also verified on motorauthority.com . You'll have to search for the article though, I'm too lazy to link it atm.

As far as large v-6 engines.

GM has used the 4.3L V6 for long time. Used in blazers and s10, etc.

ALso turbo'ed it for the Syclone and Typhoon duo.

Ford also used a 300Cube (5 Liter) inline 6 in older broncos. It is a beast of an engine.

I would hand's down rather have a forced inducted smaller displacement engine, than a larger n/a application.

Modability. Can't beat it.
