thoughts on mixing tire brands

with the talk of rapid rear tire wear i was wondering. obviously the fronts will still be good when the rears are smoked... what does everyone think about replacing the rears with a different brand until the fronts wear out. obviously i would perfer all the same brand but i dont want to buy P zeros again for the rears if i dont get more agreeable mileage out of them.

Stockers up front and R888's in the rear!!!

I also do it on my Z06 sometimes....

I would probably avoid putting tires on the rear that were a lot less sticky. Then you might have the tail get out of hand in a corner with the fronts hanging on tenaciously. With four comparable tires you'd likely just slide more evenly.

If someone more knowledgeable thinks this is wrong then update us.

as people said before try to use same level of performance tires. So Re01r, starspec, khumo xs, toyo R1r,R888,T1r should all work fine.

However i would recommand using the same tire if you are tracking the car.

I agree with everyone on here about this. When my rear Pirelli's wear out, I suspect the front tires will be fine. So, I plan on replacing the Pirelli's with the GY F1's or Falken FK-452's.

Ive had the stock front pirellis on since the start and changed to continentals at 4500 miles. Im at 10400 now, and theyre all just about bald now. Never had a problem.

Might want to also consider the Hankook Ventus V12. Great prices available right now from Tire Rack, and has higher treadwear rating than the Pirellis with an excellent review on the latest Car and Driver tire comparison test.

P.S. Get the rears in 265/35-18. You'll thank me and GBlansten later.

They look much better than the 255 P Zeros. The sidewall is more vertical, instead of slanting inwards. I'm still puzzled by Mercedes-Benz's decision to install 255s on this car in the first place. A number of members here have gone up to 275s on the stock wheels, in fact.

So, going to a Plus 0 or Plus 1 size rear tire (on the rear oem AMG wheels) would be what...265/30/18???

Avoid 265/30/18: they would be 3 percent off from stock.

Do 265/35/18 and you are only off 1 percent.

Ok; so are the 265/35/18 tires wider (or just taller) than the 255/35/18's?

The first number (265) refers to the width in millimeters. So they are ten millimeters wider.

The second number refers to the height of the sidewall. It is the percent of the width. So that tire is 35 percent of 265. So its sidewall is slightly higher than a 255/35.

2014 Ghibli S Q4 & 2008 C350
I picked up a set of C63 wheels for my C350 a few months ago and the previous owner had 275/35's installed on the rears. (P-Zero's up front and Sumi HTR-Z III's in the rear) AMG owners probably would barely notice, but I can tell the car feels sluggish with the 275's, similar to the difference when you drive by yourself and when you have friends in the car. It's like adding a few hundred pounds of weight.

Also the car sits higher in the rear, not noticeable driving or anything but when I parked it next to a C300 at the dealer you could tell, it looked slightly jacked up in the rear. Not cool.

I'm kicking the ***** out of them and will be going back to 255/35 maybe 265/35's as soon as they're bald. Probably PS2's all around.

Since I don't have near as power to play with, I get my kicks out of aggressive cornering. And although I was concerned about it at first, I haven't had any issues with the mismatched tires.

Good luck!

For my previous (tuned) BMW 335i, I had 2 sets of Falken FK-452's after I had a full set of Mich PS2's, and I swear the Falkens were 9/10ths as good as the Mich PS2's...great wet and dry grip, not too loud, and I got 20k mi. out of the rears and > 30k out of the fronts on my BMW 335i.

Also, the Falkens are almost half the cost as the Mich PS2's...I just checked DiscountTireDirect.com and they have the 265/35/18 Falken FK-452 for $172 (w/ free shipping). I will most likely go with the Falken FK-452's (or maybe, maybe GY Eagle F1 A/S) to replace my oem rear Pirelli's when they wear out

You'll have a hard time discerning the visual difference between the 255s and 265s given a 1.1% diameter difference.
