Why do our cars have two reverse gears?

It is for slippery conditions. In the snow you can engage snow mode and this gives you a higher gear ratio to help reduce the chances of slipping in reverse.
So that helps us once in a blue moon I guess.

From wiki on 7g-tronic transmission:
"The 7G-Tronic has two reverse gear ratios: 3.416 and 2.231. The winter mode, also recently named 'comfort' mode, starts out in 2nd forward and 2nd reverse."
Ratio for R1 is 3.416 and for R2 is 2.231.
I doubt I'll ever benefit from it and I'm not complaining about that for one second.

I take it you're kidding and have a dry wit? It's hard to tell if you are joking about the bolded part but I hope you are.
