iPhone charging solution that works!

I am sure there have been other people who have said that this works, but I wasn't clear on all the pieces.

rage2 ordered up this kit, but since his car is getting work done, he asked me to try it out.

This is the plug that I got with the car:

Here is what happens when I plug in my iPhone:

Here is the cable that rage2 ordered from cablejive

You plug in the car adaptor into the 12v socket in the glove box, then plug in the mini usb into the side of the cablejive adaptor. You end up with this:

charging!

What it all looks like in the glove box:

Everything working on the screen:

It is great that it works, but I am wondering why cablejive needs an external power source. Could they not have reordered the pins to make it work with just the inline adaptor?

And
My new car! haha

I actually started off with a Griffin Charge Adapter, which recodes the pins and drops 12V down to 5V on the new pins. Unfortunately, like the pioneer head units, the system is "smart" enough to detect that it can't charge the thing properly and stops sending 12V, thus, no charge. That's why I ordered this one, which bypasses the problem.

I've also got a couple of "A 001 827 84 04" cables coming. It's not available yet (that's what MB told Lone Star and they're aware of the charging problem). That's the 3G cable that will charge properly.

Dunno about the update, but yes, it is a 2010. Picked it up from the 3M place yesterday.

I am using this for my new Nano. It works by itself with no external chargers. YMMV.

You can't on 2009 or older C63s, the newer option 518 is required to make this work. If you see his cable it comes out from the top not the side of the glove box. Option 518 even allows you to plug in USB storage devices.

(on the C63 it may be option "079-UNIVERSAL MEDIA INTERFACE" not 100% sure on this)

Scosche Passport didn't work on my Canadian spec 09 C63 with Media Interface (it is different than iPod integration in US).

My "A 001 827 84 04" cable came in today. Works like a charm.

The Scosche Passport doesn't work for us with the Media Interface where we get iPod on COMMAND screen.

You can retrofit the media interface into your car, but it costs a few grand.

Canadian and european cars get the better interface by default from the looks of it.

I confirmed at the dealer that the 2010 C63 show the songs in the command center. I tested it myself. As previously mentioned, this is part of the new multimedia package and the cable included in the car will charge the iphone (it actually has 2 wires). The tech also confirmed that it would cost about 2K to retrofit this into a 2009 model. This sucks for us 09 owners but I will live with use the steering wheel controls...

Our Canadian cars came with 3 different wires for the multimedia package. One for 1st gen iPhone/ipods, one for USB, and one for stereo mini input. We had to buy the iPhone 3G/3GS cable to get it to charge. Glad to see that you guys got the new cable by default!
