Shifting into Manual, Sport or Comfort on the fly

Does anyone know if it is bad for the car to shift into the different transmission modes while in motion? the manual does say to do it while stopped.

Do you guys shift while in motion? i've done it and the car seems ok. I figured if it was bad for the car, MB probably would have electronically limited the change to park only, it would not have been difficult to do.

for those of you who didn't read the manual (i read the whole thing, i know total car nerd) it's on page 112-

"You shouldonly change the tranny mode while the car is in park"

Well that's no fun.

If page 112 is to be taken seriously then MB should have programmed the mode button to not work when the car is out of park.

JoeMoney, could you post some pics of your car? (Maybe in the Official C63 Pic Thread)

I'd really like to see your black on black.

dont do it under heavy acceleration or cornering. straightline coasting, crusing should be no problem....

these different transmission modes simply change the shift points on acceleration and braking, and the starting gear. How could it possibly do any damage changing modes while driving? you can paddle shift anytime you want which would in effect be the same as pushing the transmission mode button at anytime.

no harm at all doing it while driving

its not about damaging anything. it might make u loose control of the car when changing during heavy acceleration or cornering

Why would you push it in the middle of heavy acceleration or cornering to begin with

If this is true then please add one more pile of ***** to this already garbage transmission. It is slow and it delicated and it is way behind the competitors.

It is far from Steptronic from BMW.

I think "garbage transmission" is a bit overstated. I change from C to S to M all the time while driving, have 10,000 miles w/ no issues. Would a DCT be nice? Sure, but it's just not available in the C. While the EVO has it, I guess those folks would prefer less turbo lag or would want more torque. So, unless you can afford to step up to a 599 or something like it, you're probably gonna have some complaints, otherwise our cars wouldn't be as affordable as they are.

Not usually, but if the sales agent knows these cars inside and out, races, takes his sports bikes to tracks, pushes them to the limit, and can show me every little button in the car and what it does...then yes, I'll believe him.

i'm not too worried, just thought it was interesting that they put it in the manual. i've been doing it while coasting, just to be safe.

Exactely! That manual page is just a major cover-a** from MB in case you are a dumb*** and push the button while accelerating on a limited space, resulting in a big bad boom.
