135I forgive the blasphemer

I was creeping on a BMW site, mentioning my son (20 yo ARMY) would like a 135i. they all went bananas saying a 20 yo could not handle a 135I. their like a cult over there my son handles my 63 fine and drives his moms Mustang GT (300hp) all the time. weird.

Typical BMW owner behavior.... Not surprising.

people make assumptions about other people based on their own experiance/skills.

clearly, BMW sales people a **** drivers and make that assumption of others.

I personally think 135i has a lot of potential. I don't know what has been done and what is available out there for the car. And to the op who's thinking of buying this car for his/her son I dunno how you'll feel about my comment. But I feel that it has a lot of potential due to the weight of the car and the engine (coming from a 335i) engine. I would assume that BMW detunes it? like it does our C63s. So in that retrospect I believe the car has a lot of power to be gained from modifications.
My personal opinion, I dislike 2 doors, and I dislike crowded back seats.

Hasn't your son totaled a couple of cars already? But regardless, I don't think the 135i should be too much of a car for him as long as he doesn't mod it or anything.

Over here stock for stock the 135i and 335i are both sold with as having the same HP and Torque output. I was told the only difference between the two is that the 135i has a more restrictive exhaust but a little less weight to deal with. Neither would mean much when mods come into play. The 335i would have a bigger engine bay which may give it more latitude.

No one ever bought me a car. I hope your son realizes how fortunate he is.

dmyrick doesn’t really indicate he’s buying it for his son, he’s only said his son would like a 135i.

If he does buy him one, lucky boy I say.

My parents couldn’t afford to do it for me but I did it for my boys (nothing fancy) and I’d be proud if one day they’ll be in a position to help their children as well. It’s all part of the maternal instinct.

I hear ya on that one. As a father of two, my own paternal instincts has me thinking awd, no convertibles, definitely no motorcycles, and if he wants to mod then perhaps a big brake kit (lol), and nothing else when it comes time to get them their first vehicle.

I guess I didn't learn anything from watching Finding Nemo 20 times with them.

Well, maybe its a Bimmer thing because a few years back in Ocala, FL near John Travolta's Jumbolair airport location, a young man (can't recall the age but he was about 19-20) crashed a brand new M5 and killed himself and a few friends. I believe he was trying to see what she could do and launched her off a end of runway berm a few hundred feet in the air, hitting a tree. Point is, why give a loaded gun to a "kid??" Maybe he "believed he could fly" ala the song?? Sad BUT true.

2009 C63 AMG / 2007 BMW 130i M Sport
*flame suit on*

I would never stereotype. My first car was an Audi S3 (which was pretty powerful compared to the other boys vehicles around here). A few years later, I got my father's E46 BMW 330i sport, which was very decent too.

When I was starting to drive, I never abused the car and except for a minor accident - where I hit a cab while changing lanes and had to replace the front bumper of the Audi - never caused headaches in this matter to anyone. I always babied my cars since day one. Point is: I never made my parents regret the cars that they gave me or helped me buy (case of the BMW, sold to me much much cheaper than it would)

The 135i is a VERY nice vehicle. If I had a son and he told me he would get a 135, I would totally support him. It's insanely safe and handles great. Now, it is not irresponsability-proof. if your son totaled a few cars, you should seriously think about talking him into something that would not make him feel a F-1 pilot.

Most of the time, it actually depends on the kid not the car. I've seen some 20 year olds drive super fast cars very responsibly and have also seen 60 year olds drive cars very carelessly. Usually, if they were brought-up with a solid foundation of responsibility and accountability, they end-up handling it more maturely.

hey guys just some input on the 1 series. i also have a 128i convertible. it is a fantastic ride. handles like a go cart, good ride, top down, carbon fiber strut tower brace, plenty of usable straight six power. it is not a benz, it is not an amg, and it is not a c63. it's a different kind of fun and great to take to the beach.
btw my son dented the fender on the c32 and ripped the mirror off. he now drives a stratus. my daughter loves the c32 and respects it. my other son drove an e350 to college for a year without incidence. but he's on the deans list.

I don't see a problem with buying your kid a car as long as (a) you think he deserves it (tries hard in school or work), just can't afford the car that he wants so badly and (b) the little **** appreciates the car every single time he looks at it knowing what his parents had to do to get it for him. I'm basically that kid, and god knows I appreciate it. I still remember the smile on my face when I drove my dream car home for the first time after spending 4 years dreaming about it. But I digress... I wanted to say that from my point of view (a 21 year old with an E55) it ALL depends on your kid. I know kids who've died in cars with less than 200 horsepower, the kid doesn't need a "loaded gun" to kill himself, if he tries hard enough he can beat himself to death with it. Just make sure he's responsible. I've had my car for over 2 years now and I haven't put a scratch on it. I speed once in a while (2 dismissed speeding tickets since I got the car) but I probably drive more responsibly than the older guys with E55s on this forum. Just make sure any kid is responsible before giving them a (fast/quick) car. My own personal feelings on the matter (as harsh as this may be) is that if you can't trust your car with a fast car, you probably shouldn't trust him with any car.

What I like!
I have an '09 135 Coupe. My first fuel pump died at 3400 miles, the 2nd one went at 5800 miles. Along with a few other electronic glitches, I question the 135i's durability over the long haul... but that goes for all new BMWs -- I think their quality has taken a dive along with their cars' increase in complexity. I do not have the same concerns with my C63!

I hope MB/AMG builds a competitor to the upcoming ///M1.
