I am interested in this question as well. I have used the differential housing to jack the rear of my and my wife's W203's without any ill effects, but it does make me nervous every time I do it. Looking at the differential housing on my C63, I would think it is probably OK to lift it there, but I don't want to be the first to try it (and I might not ever try it if I had a factory LSD with the finned diff cover). The diff is not part of the suspension and seems to be pretty well locked into the rear subframe at both the front and back, so I think it is OK, but still. . .
OP - why don't you try using the diff cover, and let us know how it goes?

if you're doing rear, parking brake and wedge the front to prevent roll. I wouldn't keep it on the supplied cross jacks for anything more than quick wheel swap. Get a quality jack with rollers to keep it from tilting over.
