Mercedes C63 AMG versus BMW M3

It all started in 1988 when the first and biggest car manufacturer in the world, Mercedes-Benz decided to sell to the public a four door high performance luxury sedan. The Mercedes-Benz 190e Crossworth. It was the perfect dream toy for every young man who wanted to swerve through traffic on the German Autobahn in an agile luxury sedan. BMW, Mercedes’ main rival and competitor, couldn’t resist but lunch their own sport version of the 190e which they called the M3. Many drivers and car enthusiasts will argue that the M3 is more of a sporty car that drivers can take to the track and have some fun on the weekend, and many others will argue that the Mercedes is a sports sedan for the rich and spoiled. Mercedes later on changed their mad machines name from 190e to C63 AMG. The C63 serves its purpose better than the M3, because it does what it is intended to do.
Twenty years later, both cars have gone through many dramatic changes and designs. Both cars started out as four cylinder cars; in 1995 Mercedes moved to a bigger engine on the second generation C-class to offer a six cylinder with some extra power, and then went on in 1998 to offer a V8 engine which provided enough power to bring the inner-child out of any driver at any given time. But so did BMW, and in 2008 both automobiles came out with complete new designs. And the horsepower war between the two automakers got even bigger.
Jeremy Clarkson the host of Top Gear, the most viewed auto show in the world, quoted as “The C63 AMG must rank as one of the world’s most complete cars in terms of performance, carrying capability, comfort, looks and quality.” These two German mad driving machines where originally build to offer drivers those four exact words that Clarkson mentioned above, performance, comfort, looks and quality.
Hoist yourself into the deeply bolstered front bucket seats, and grab the sculpted, flat-bottom steering wheel. The shift paddles are at three and nine o’clock and they respond instantly. They’re still connected to automatic gear box, but the quick responses and blipped-throttle downshifts make you forget that it’s a traditional automatic drive train. The C63 it’s a loud car but its quietest out of the two German mad machines. An aggressive right foot will generate cloudy burnouts, and reach a fuss-free lunch to 60mph in 3.9-seconds, easily outrunning the BMW.
Many auto TV shows have tested the two German hot rods head to head in terms of performance and straight line traditional drag racing. The M3 has always been faster around the bends, and the C63 is much faster in a straight line drag race. The main objective of these cars was intended to offer a mid-size sedan that would be practical enough to use on everyday basis to get from point A to B, but at the same time provide some performance for when drivers are in a rush and need to swerve through traffic. And, of course, luxury is a must considering that both manufacturers are two of the top luxury automakers in the world. And the Mercedes does just that. It’s a mid size sedan that can seat up to five, has standard luxury features such as power sunroof, automatic speed-shift gearbox and nineteen inch wheels. Of course these options are available on the M3 but that will cost you a bit more.
The M3 has been a work in progress for twenty years now, and this fourth-generation car arrives with double the number of cylinders as the first one and more than double the horsepower. Still, drivers feel that the race car like character of the original has been diluted by weight, horsepower, and electronically controlled damping, and the over the top confusing iDrive interface.
The M3 is a faster car on the track because it has eliminated some of its luxury standard features such as the power sunroof to replace the entire roof with carbon fiber instead of sheet metal, and the results of this is a lighter car and the lighter the car is the easier it will stick to the road against the pulling gravity forces when you take a turn at a high speed. Most drivers that buy these two vehicles almost never take their cars to the track, but instead race on regular streets from light to light against other fast cars. And that’s why Mercedes decided to keep all its luxury options because its purpose is to be the ultimate luxury car but at the same time be fast for the few seconds one might race from one light to the next.
