Indeed, it's a really sad situation overall for all families involved.

With respect to my choice of an E550 replacement, the C63 was just too "high maintenance" for me at this point in my life. Since this is my daily driver, the cost of replacement tires and gas was a noticeable expense that I couldn't really justify to myself on a re-do.

The delta for a loaded '11 E550 vs. a loaded '09 C63 (everything except performance package) was about $6k more, but it's got all the bells and whistles (Distronic, etc.). When you factor in gas/tires, it's probably a wash over the life of the car...
