I might be transporting the 63 to Southern California and was starting to realize all I saw was 91 octane. Is this what you guys are filling up with? I mean minimum that we need is 93. Any repercussions?

Welcome to the club!!! yeah, Arizonans feel your pain too. I only fill with 91oct as well. I haven't had any major issues although the car could run much better with 93oct.

I could posssibly see a limp mode if you were to run the car hard under extreme heat on 91ot but I haven't had any issues and I have been running 91oct all the time(no choice)

Seriously guys this is SoCal we have more Exotic cars here than any state. I'm sure the Ferrari's and Veyron's are doing just fine With our crappy 91 octane.

Yeah.. true but correct me if I am wrong, Cali Cars for Cali markets are slightly detuned. It might be for emissions but it might as well be for the gas restriction.

Like you said there are many exotic cars out there running 12 to 1 compresion ratio from factory.

Not true. All cars that are sold in the US needs to pass CA smog and emission standards and they all have the same tunes. If this was not the case then every person that moves in to CA will be in a lot of fun attempting to register their cars.

See this thread regarding the 93 min rating. It is RON for Europe not PON for North America. 91 PON is the minimum rating for NA.

Thanks Mort. I am gonna read it. Life is good right now in Chicago where its 93 octane running out all the fountains. I know about all cars that come into the US are specd for CA. CA runs the bottom line so I certainly hope that these engines are not seeing build up and performance issues early...

I hope not too because 91 is all we can get here. All I burn is Shell for their nitrogen additive to help reduce top end buildup. It is not always convenient to find a Shell station. I think you will be fine unless you are planning serious performance mods. Then California will make it difficult. If you have or are planning to get a tune make sure it is based on 91 and not 93. Well that is stating the obvious...LOL.

Enjoy the 93 while you can.

Like Mort says RON rating and US rating (PON) is different. Don't worry so much. Your motor will be fine.

fwiw, you can buy 100 octane here at certain 76 stations.

RON Research Octane Number UK, Europe, South Africa & Australia

PON Pump Octane Number Average of RON & MON. Usually 4-5 units lower than the RON. USA, Canada

MON Motor Octane Number Motor sport applications. Measured under more severe conditions than RON (higher revs etc). Usually 8-10 units lower than the RON.

RdON Road Octane Number Average of RON & MON. Usually 4-5 units lower than the RON. USA, Canada

AKI Ant Knock Index Average of RON & MON. Usually 4-5 units lower than the RON. USA, Canada

(R + M )/2 Average of RON & MON. Usually 4-5 units lower than the RON. USA, Canada
Octane number, Octane rating or octane

p.s., toss some Techron in the tank once in a while if you're concerned about carbon. Or just drive it fast and hot often.

There is a 76 gas station in Pasadena that actually sells 101 octane for $8 per gallon. But 91 octane in CA is fine as long as you use good gas from chevron, mobil 1, shell, or 76.

can the c63 run in e85? in my moms manual to her c300 it says the ALL 3 series with auto trans can run it. Any and every gas regardless of octane will leave residue on the deck of the piston, in the fuel lines, injectors and fuel filter. e85 cleans it.

The C63 cannot run E85. The vehicle must be Flexible Fuel and will have a label reading Premium gasoline or E85 Only! on the fuel filler flap.

All models of the C300 with automatic transmission are Flex Fuel.
