And I take it to MB Mississauga, and they pop a liter of mobil 1 5w40 in for free! How nice. I thought it should be 0w40. They say no, it has changed to 5w40??

So the dealer changed the specs? I have to call mine.

0W40 is supposed to have better viscosity than 5w40 under cold. I guess if you're in Canada like me 0W40 is the way to go and what MB will suggest, although this will not be night and day.

I was not impressed by the oil quality of Mobil1 (temps, taking in oil, etc). The quality of the oil you use makes much more difference in my book... and how often you change it.

Chief, if you were to change the brand, which one would you use?? Would it really bring the temps down a bit? Thanks.

I did change brand. As mentionned before on other threads I'm using Red Line oil now, temps have gone down big time, not burning any oil at the race track on hot days either. Over all big thumbs up to Red line for delivering the goods.

Check their website to find the nearest dealer. Performance parts shop can usually get u some too. http://www.redlineoil.com/

And no worries about the quality of red line? Not to discount the track temp issue, I'd hesitate to change types of oil when AMG specifically recommends a certain brand. Obviously there was some $$$ to illicit that endorsement, but I would hope that the $$$ would not result in a lesser product being recommended.

Oil temps are the best indicator an oil is doing its job. If it gets hot, it means there is more friction. A good oil reduces friction, lowering oil temps, meaning its working good and your engine is loving it =)

Your just putting a better, more expensive product with the same required specs, I don't see how Mercedes could prove it did make some damage in any way. They recommend Mobil1, that doesn't mean you need to use them exclusively.

Mobil1 syntec is a generic brand. Red Line makes oil for dragsters, Nascar, GT cups, and others. It's simply the best oil you can put in your car. Less friction/better viscosity, lower temps, better performance, etc.

I went with their regular oil (not race oil since they they don't have 0W40 or 5W40), worth the extra cost.

I would not worry about reliability, they make oil for cars with 8000HP, I think they can handle our little 450HP

Another oil argument...run the redline, do a UOA, then compare. Redline is 229.5, and the specs compare favorably to m1, so doubt there's much diff.

Here are a few comparisons to end the debate:

Mobil1 0W40
Viscosity Index 186
Vis @ 40 deg 78.3
Vis @ 100 deg 14

Red Line 0W40
Viscosity Index 197
Vis @ 40 deg 81
Vis @ 100 deg 15.1

These are just numbers, not taking into account Red Line has better natural oil components and lubricants, without thickeners, etc.
