ECU, intake, camshafts, forged internals, headers and exhaust. Another big difference aside from the engine components is the weight.

Several things were changed for the M159 from the M156. Intake manifold, exhaust headers, forged internals, revised tuning, dry sump lubrication, etc.

True, and this is why I like our engine better. I am too scare to think of all those horror stories about carbon build up in DI engines...

They are not stories they are facts..... a couple years ago my buddys brand new RS4 refused to start after 5,000 miles were put on it. Audi diagnosed it as carbon build up and made him pay $1,000 to fix it Really makes me want to become an Audi owner

I had carbon buildup, faulty injectors, fouled spark plugs all at 28k-30k miles on my 08 335 (Direct Inject) as well. Fortunately, it was all covered under warranty, but imagine having your car stall out on the highway going 60 or just not starting up or suddenly shaking/vibrating violently and abruptly stopping....

This happened 5x in a 4 week period and enough was enough

I too came from an RS4 for about 60,000kms and had multiple carbon buildup issues. It's a flawed design that basically can only be fixed as toyota does in their DI engines by putting another injector upstream in addition to the direct injectors. Only way to get fuel cleansing behind the valves.

Audi really tried to screw a ton of people with this. Of course it should be warrantied, and mine certainly was. But I had to kick and scream and threaten all kinds of media before they would listen. I had intake manifold replaced, intake flap motor recplaced, fuel additives, you name it. Finally they upgraded the ECU so that it wouldn't be as sensitive to misfires. The ECU upgrade didn't actually fix anything. Just make the misfire tolerances higher so the CEL wouldn't show up as often. What a mess! VAG needs to do something drastic and quick!

I think so, and so does the NEW 5.5 bi-turbo from AMG... and this is why I am buying my C63 now.

No DI!

I thought for sure the SLS engine was DI. Anyway, the Dry sump oil system is straight from racing.

if rs4s 4.2 has this problem would the R8 V8 have the same issue.....

It most certainly does. Any and all of VAG direct injection engines have this problem to varying degrees. The 4.2 in the R8 is *pretty much* identical to the 4.2 in the RS4, not to be confused with the older 4.2 in the S4, A6/S6, and A8/S8 previous generation which was not DI.

The amount of valve timing overlap plays a huge role in the problem, and the 4.2 in the RS4 and R8 are really bad. The upcoming RS5 will likely also have the problem even though Audi has suggested big changes in engine to keep away carbon buildup (things like modified head design, timing, oil temps, etc...)

I'm just waiting to see how the B8 S4 with it's supercharged direct injection is doing... I think it'll have the issues as well...

As I suspected, the new Audi S4 with direct injection is showing signs of buildup too...
