Device Not Connected?

I was hoping someone might be able to help me with this. I have been using my iPhone 3G for the Aux Media plug-in in the glove box without any problem until recently. Now, whenever I plug it in, it give the Device Not Connected (or something to that effect). I'm not sure why. I regularly update via iTunes, but I'm not sure if it's a software issue, or hardware. And if hardware, is it the car or phone. I took a brush and cleaned out any crap on the connecter port, but no luck. Anyone experience this problem?
