I think if finally know why I think the SLS looks so goofy...

It's those damned wheels. Way too big.

Question is, where will auto manufacturers stop? 22 inch wheels? 24? 28? 32 inch?

There is a line that would be wrong to cross when it comes to factory wheel sizes, IMHO.

As far as most MB's having "undersized" wheels... I don't know, 19" is a pretty decent size, no? What will people say in 10 years, "22 inch wheels? Man those are small!"?
