AMG 156 engine

Are all 156 engines the same? I understand the performance pack and SLS units have different internals but are the engines in the rest of the range the same just with software tweaks.
I noticed that some companies claim higher outputs for say an E63 over C63 once tuned. E63 comes from factory with 50kw more than C63 but if they are the same engine shouldn't they end up the same once both are tuned.

E63 has 2.75" diameter catback exhaust. C63 has 2.5" diameter exhaust. So, the M156 in the E63 likely makes more power because of less restrictive exhaust.

But, otherwise, the M156 in the two cars are the same, unless the C63 has the P31 package and the forged internals-- in that case, we don't yet know whether the forged internals make extra power.

Perhaps those with greater knowledge on building N/A engines could chime in.

Forged internals will never make more power when untouched, they might be stronger and provide more resistant to detonation but it doesn't provide more power alone.

From reading on this forum, the e Class and SLS fitted with the M156 have more agressive factory ECU tune(better timing, fuel, throtle opening, etc).
It is a clear way from Mercedes Benz to make a gap on marketing between C class, E class and others.

Mercedes is not the only one, Porsche does the same thing. Thy will never put the 911 engine on the Boxster, why? because the Boxster will steal the sales.

Looking at the DMS website in Australia http://dmsautomotive.com.au/index.ph...&id=4&Itemid=4 they claim considerably more power for E63/CL63 than C63 once tuned.
Factory C63 DMS tuned
336kw 600nm 366kw 660nm

Factory E63/CL63 DMS tuned
386km 630nm 415kw 684nm

If the factory differences between the 2 are only due to different engine management and slightly bigger exhaust shouldn't they both be very similar once both are tuned or is this just marketing?

I did read this somewhere (cant remember where) but he is exactly right. The internals are the same, except for the SLS. The power differences are a combination of tuning, air intake tracts and exhaust. They gave the C series less power to differentiate it from the E series and so on.

Hope this helps.

SLS is a whole different beast, but for C vs rest

exhaust diameter (2.5 vs 2.75) and primarily throttle opening at WOT (87% i believe)

I think its marketing.

415kw = 560hp, for tune only, I doubt it.

That's similar power that a C63, tune, headers, exhaust is putting down.
