Thanks Obsidian. My car is going in for service on Monday so I will get them to check. Would the sway bar links be faulty because I put the coilovers in or is this a common problem?

As you drop the car you need longer sway bar links or the links and sway bars bind. Adjustable sway bar links will fix this problem but some of them make a metallic rattle sound over bumps.

Thanks Duane. Are you saying when the links and sway bars bind this could be causing the knocking sound at the front? Doesn't seem to do it in the rear.
Do you have them on your car or do you know anyone that does? Which is the best brand to get?

I have the Bilstein coil overs which come with longer front sway bar links with rubber ends similar to stock. No noise in the front. On the rear the stock links were too short causing the bar to bind (a knocking sound). I replaced them with adjustable links. The knock when away but the links do make a bit of noise as they have spherical ends that allow the link to twist a bit a make a slight clink noise. I put dust boots on which made them quite.

bilsstein shocks ,Dinan springs, coilovers Ground control, etc etc and while handling improved in the end my conclusion always was that if if you use the car as daily driver you are always better of with a stock suspension.
ALL of these mods ALWAYS had some issue, rattles, knocks, all kinds of stuff and in my opinion extremely irritating.
My 09 C63 with P30 handles great but could benefit from an after market suspension fix, it's harsh as a dd and with high speed and high side wind 990mls/hr plus) the steering needs more corrections than my old E46's , BUT I am only going to invest money in a good set if they can guarantee that my teeth are not going to rattle out of my mouth and no freaking knocking sounds.

Then you'll just be riding on stock suspension forever then as I don't see ANY aftermarket suspension component company EVER offering a guarantee on something that is as subjective as ride comfort and handling.

There is the alternative of factory suspension parts not offered on US cars. MBZ, Porsche and BMW use different (and lower suspension) components on rest of world (ROW) cars than USA versions due to bumper height regulations. (This or course may also be changing as Europe adopts bumper height regulations.) They are more expensive than aftermarket parts but you don't have to compromise with fitment and sound issues.

Got my car back from the dealer and they couldn't find anything wrong. They said they removed the links and drove the car and the knocking was still there. Maybe the shocks need replacing even though they are not even a year old yet.
Any other ideas?
