New Issue ???
Car would not start Wed afternoon in a shopping center parking lot. Not your usual dead battery problem. Turning the key to the 2 stop points does not initiate the various warning lights on the dash to come on. Radio works but that is it. Steering and transmision remain locked. The Road Side Tech came and told me that they have had several cars with the same problem, some type of center column electronic locking module goes bad and the car is disabled. That part was ordered yesterday and is being installed today but I don't know the outcome yet.
Interesting thing I learned is that there is an emergency release tab down in the console next to the shifter that will allow you to put the car in neutral when the ignition is locked out. Makes getting on the flat bed much easier even though the steering column was still locked.

Was the module the final fix? I was thinking maybe a low battery in the key fob and some kind of security lockout? Just pulled that out of the hat but interested to find out what the fix is.
My 2003 1500 HD quit on two different occasions while driving 120 Kph (75 mph) down the highway and I had to pull to the side of the highway. I was lucky not to get hit by another car and no power steering or brakes. Both times the fuel pump fuse blew and the dealer charged me $140.37 to change it. Not like the old days a fuse would cost $0.25 and the mechanic would likely put it in for free. Once the fuel pump fuse goes all ignition is disabled and the starter will not even turn over. Now I carry fuses and thank goodness it has not happened again.

Car was returned today, working fine and covered under warranty. Work order refers to the defective part as EIS steering lock. Following is the tech notes:
Code 6002 traced to EIS locked had to cut to remove
468070 Electric Steering Lock 4598 WMB
204-545-81-32 EIS Steering
r&r complete steering column, cut and remove steering lock - lock was in theft protection mode, replace steering lock, program using programing key, perform initial startup, clear dtc's after repair.

The sensor that tells the engine you're in P fails, hence you can't start it. Next time turn the key and push the brake pedal down to unlock the shifter and move the shifter to N and it should start.
