I'm going to propose an alternate theory. The emblem is positioned by the three studs, but it is actually held in place by double-sided tape. I'm betting when they swapped the emblem from your OEM trunk to the CF one, they didn't replace the tape.

so the star piece is like $9-$13 from what i've found online... i wonder what the dealer will quote me for the fix since my car is in the shop for service...

what are the grommets? i saw it on the parts list... do i need this?

my original emblem on the stock trunk was not held in place with double sided tape... you just needed to line it up and push it in... it doesn't snap in or anything from what i remember...

turns out the dealer sells it for $20... which i think is about the same with the shipping and handling cost from a site like getmercedesparts...

wait... it gets better...

i was able to look over some surveillance footage and i saw the ******* who did it... i'm about 99.9% sure he did it... from what i could see, the guy works for a shipping company and was delivering boxes to the business next door from where i work... i can see him walking behind my car and he seems to graze his fingers across the emblem area... and then a few minutes later he is walking back to his truck and passes my car again but this time he stops behind my car, faces the trunk and puts a hand on the back area, and seems to pull something off and then walks away...

the information i was able to get was the shipping company name off the truck, the phone number of the company on the truck, and a partial license plate

what would you do?

would you report this and get the guy in trouble?

or take the loss and try not to make a big deal out of it... honestly, i was upset when i realized it was missing... but i figured there was nothing i could do... and i practically had wrote it off thinking it happened the night before something... but when i saw the guy doing it, it pissed me off more...

i could buy a new one for $20 from the dealer... and i would just need to stick it back on... hopefully he didn't break anything behind the holes of the trunk where the emblem needs to stick into... but other than that, there shouldn't be any damage... i hope

Normally, I would call his work and report it to a boss and possibly the police just to teach this clown a lesson but in this case it may be more trouble than it's worth. If you do report it, he knows were you park your car and could return later and damage it more.

Make sure he didn't damage anything internal and if he didn't it may be best to just walk away and consider yourself lucky more damage wasn't done. Karma is a b*tch and hopefully he gets paid back in full.

My 2¢. Regardless if it's $20 or $20K, stealing is stealing. I might be old school but it serves him right to be reported and get what he deserves. He will not learn his lesson until he gets caught and get reported. Obviously he has a job and could have done this because he is just sick or needs the thrill. You can still report it and try to be anonymous. And if he is smart he will learn his lesson and not do it again.

On the other hand, just spend the 20$ for the emblem & install it yourself... it's super easy as it will align with the 3 holes. I would just call it a day, reporting the guy might just bring you more headache, like a keyed car... not worth it since you dont know what kind of ppl you are dealing with.

I agree with YYZ, these emblems are on tight... so pulling on it without heating it first is nearly impossible... most likely your bodyshop didnt changed the double sided tape.

Trust me, the new one will need a screwdriver to remove... if he tries again, then you can report him. Just my .02$.

Again, playing devil's advocate - perhaps he noticed the three 'holes' in an otherwise awesome looking trunklid and was curious about them. Not defending the guy, just proposing an alternate theory (again).

Well, there are ways around that if you really do not want to get caught.

He was oblivious to the cameras when he took your star and if he's arrested or fired he will know cameras caught him. If he returns it will be with some disguise if he has any brains. Maybe something covering his face so he cannot be identified. It sucks but there are people out there who do this.
