@DuaneC63 - LOL that was clever and i enjoyed reading it this am. i TOTALLY see your point and PLEASE no one here misunderstand me and think im advising on never flushing your brake fluid! btw my tranny has been flushed several times in the pathfinder... ha ha

im just saying that IF you have for example a 2 year old C63 or mercedes with 10k miles on it.... i HARDLY think you are going to see a visit from "Mr. Mayhem" if you dont flush your brakes. on a side note i will probably flush mine every 3-4 years. but thats just what im comfortable with. everyone has to do whats good for them.

very clever however Mr. Duane! ha ha

Thanks for the grin. However, I would wager my first brake fluid change for my new GLK that 95%-99% of ALL the vehicles on the road are running their original brake fluid. If your secnario were true, the entire highway system would be eternally clogged with mangled vehicles. If I'm only half right, 45%-49% running the original brake fluid, we would see massive catastropes daily.

Your brake lines are also deteriorating because of the moisture in the system. Everytime you hit the brakes they ballon up like a sausage. But until one breaks, who's the wiser. So one hot summer day you take a long drive and end up going down a long steep grade (like the I-5 grapevine) and to be a law abiding citizen you keep tapping your brakes to stay with in the speed limit. (You don't want to put it in a lower gear because that will just fry the tranny fluid you've never bothered to change.) This adds substancial heat to the brake hydraulic fluid and all the moisture starts to boil off. Then for no apparent reason a jerk some place not to far up in front of you manages to cause a freeway closing accident and you're faced with a sea of red tail light and screaching tires. You're reaction to it hit the binders hard, but guess what, the pedal just keeps decending to the floor (and all that ABS pulsing isn't helping matters) and your speed is not decreasing at the same rate as everyone else. You guess what happens next? "I'm Mayhem and if you got cut rate insurance you could be paying for this yourself"
DuaneC63,

I'm glad that someone, with knowledge has explained this to the mis-informed. Also the moisture will settle to the lowest point, as oil and water do not mix. You could have corrosion developing in the master cylinder or on the calipers pistons. People just change your brake fluid every two years, and you will be just fine.

I am a believer! However, we are both in the smallest minority. Ma & Pa Kettle ain't never changed no brake fluid. Or transmission fluid. They are still on the road. Who is right??????????????

Wayne,

I've performed a tranny service, brake fluid, engine coolant, rear differential, oil/air fliter replacement and oil service on my E63 this year. You can either pay now, or definitely pay later when the issue develops into a much bigger problem. Seeing that your from East Texas, changing the tranny fluid would defintely be on my priority list, as the tranny is one of the most important components on the car. I will also perform the same level of service on my C63, when it becomes due. It's just part of my PMCS (Preventative Maintenance Checks and Services).

I get it. I really do. However, my GLK only has a little over 900 miles on it at the moment.
I just sold our 1999 Volvo S70 that had been maintained by the Book according to Volvo. After 151,550 miles, the car started and ran exactly like the new M-B GLK parked in the same garage. Engine, transmission, suspension, etc. were all original except for normal expendables. No rattles. No squeeks. No leaks, either of car fluids going out or enviornmental liquids coming in. If the GLK performs as well, I will be pleased.

However, we are in the 1% of the 1% that folks are talking about today. Meaning that very few people take good care of their vehicles. While those who don't somehow manage to survive themselves.

Be safe. Have fun.

Wayne,

I get what your saying, I truly do. And your absolutely right, but why take a chance of having that very expensive repair bill looming over your head. That Mercedes will not honor, because you haven't completed any of their recommended services according to the mileage or time intervals. Their are people driving Mercedes that never change their rear diff, engine coolant, or transmission fluid, but I don't think their AMGs.

I knew a lady that never performed any services on her BMW, and it lasted for 3 yrs. She just dogged that poor car, and it was brand new when she bought it. She didn't "Take pride in her ride "

One more time: We keep cars a long time. We take good care of them. They are always garaged. They look and drive like new after 9, 12+ and 15+ years respectively for the last 3 we have owned. We don't take chances. We are not the average owner.

My wife and I are at odds at the moment on oil change interval. She says, "Follow the book." I say, "Divide the book numbers in half." We'll see.
