Windshield Wipers not under warrenties???

So two nights ago it was raining hard, I was driving in the highway and my passenger side wiper just suddenly broke off for unknown reasons. It was only the blades that flew off, somehow the attachment between the legs and blade broke. I still had to use the wipers for another 20 min in the highway so the attachment part was scratching my window the whole time.

I took my car to benz service right the next day, but they said they won't cover anything -.- I had to change both wipers because they said the other one's attachment part is breaking too for unknown reasons..

I find it kinda lame that benz warrenty don't even cover something little as windshield wipers, is this right ?

I believe they are considered wear and tear items... having said that, wear and tear items are covered in Canada for 24 months... don't know if you are within the timeframe or not.

Yea, my car was only purchased last summer right before the facelift came out . . so should I contact benz and do a complain about this?

I would go to the dealer with the warranty booklet turned to the page where it says that wear and tear items are covered for 24 months and ask them to fix their "error". I wouldn't contact MB directly over wipers.

I just called the salesman who sold me the car and discussed about this, he also told me benz won't cover these damage :@ he said these are wear and tear items then i told him wtf wear and tear items have 24 months warrenties don't they? And then he just said eh... not windshield wipers. This sounds so BS - -

Which dealer?

I'd imagine that a wiper ripping off after 7 months is more than 'wear and tear'. I'd follow up with the service manager if I were you.

Yes
Bud, hit the service manager, point to where in the manual it says they are covered for 24 months.

If he still denies, explain to him how it BROKE OFF - their manufactured part broke, give me a break.

If he still denies....well I dont know punch him in the throat.

Mb Canada is getting tougher on their warranty work. They sent out memos and meetings have taken place already. I guess mb Canada has the worst loses of all the MB regions.

They said its my fault because I knew the broken wiper was scratching my window but I continued to use it. I told them I was in the highway and it was raining hard, I had no choice but to use it. They say I should claim insurance company for road hazard

I can't believe some stealership here in Canada can't even make a customer happy... they should learn from the guys in Australia. (regardless of the cost of the vehicle from both countries).

If you want better service, try the North Van MB service department. Although the RMD dealer is close to where I live, I've always taken my car to North Van because it's closer to where I work and they've never had issues with any of my warranty claims. I also don't like the fact that the RMD service facility is not in the same location as the dealership so every time you drop your car off, it actually gets driven to another facility about 6 or 7 kms away.

My Service and Warranty Information 2010 booklet says on page 8:

WIPER BLADES AND INSERTS: Damaged or worn wiper blades and wiper blade inserts are not covered.

Looks like the OP is out of luck on this one.

I know that hind sight is 20/20, but if you had a rag in the car, you could have propped that under the wiper arm to keep it from scratching the glass.

Correct Mort... I just checked and wear and tear is covered but wipers are specifically excluded from this. Guess the "read the manual" first approach is always best

call your customer assistance center, I wouldn't really care about the blades, but the window is a bigger issue I would be concerned with.

There are kits available to remove scratches from your windshield. I had a similar problem on a used car I bought many years ago - and found a 'glass polishing kit' that included a drill attachment and some polish. It worked very well.

I would have stopped and removed the wiper arm to avoid the scratching of the windshield.

Look I don't support the attitude the dealer gave you or the poor customer relations they provide, that's just plain stupid on their part, they have some discretion to make customers happy, but, as the owner and operator, one must make some efforts for empathy for the car and take some action to avoid damage.

It would be the same as if a tire blew. Irrespective of the tire warantee, if you drive on the flat and damage the rim, you can't expect the tire company to replace the rim.

2013 E350 wiper issues

Have a 2013 E350 with 2000 miles. Last weekend the wiper blade flies off while driving and the arm flies back into position and cracks the windshield. Received the same story from the dealer that it is not covered under warranty and I am responsible to pay to have it fixed. Expect more from a $60,000 vehicle.

I would push back. Normal wear of the wipers would just make them less effective and streaky. I can't conceive of any reasonable explanation why "normal" wear of a wiper would lead to it flying off, let alone cracking your windshield. I'm assuming they're going to let your insurance take care of your windshield and they want you to replace the wiper yourself.

You are correct. I will just leave the crack for now and tell people how it happened. Great publicity for Mercedes!
