Coolant leak

Hey Guys it is very unfortunate what some of you are going through. We have seen the flaws in the M156 engine, and this is definitely one of them. With that being said we have designed an ARP Head Stud that is over four times stronger than the factory torque to yield bolts. These Head Studs have been used by our high power supercharged cars and have been proven at over 15psi of boost.
Remember if installed incorrectly, a torque to yield bolt can stretch beyond its maximum tensile strength and become exponentially weaker. We believe this coupled with the fact Mercedes did have running changes is a major factor in why people are having these problems. If anyone is interested feel free to PM or email us for more details. Thanks guys.

Good question. Can you do one at a time back and forth from opposite ends (one after the other) without remving the head(s)?

Got some feedback from dealership.
They unmounted the engine and heads and discovered that one head bolt is broken.
Now they are waiting for new instructions, how to proceed from factory.
Totally slow process....

The main problem about the costs is that current dealer canīt find any trace from factory database about first service. I contacted previous dealer and they told that the first service is carried out, but they canīt reveal/disclose to me. Also they are not very capable to make modifications in system, so another dealers could see relevant information.
Is here anybody who could help me with this issue?

Hi.
I have serious problem with my C63 (2009 and 35 000 miles). Over the last 1,5 months I have constantly losing coolant. So far I have filled with extra 4 liters in it. Car has been twice in the repair shop and they donīt find any leakage - everything is dry as usual.
So today they told me that maybe I have crack in the engine or something else and that causes coolant loss into engine. Does anybody have any information about it or same problem?
P.S. Does the 63 engine have any extended warranty via factory as it is serious fault if engine has crack??

Update. I spoke with Mercedes Customer Service (Nicole Kennedy 800-367-6372x7809 who gave me the same information my local dealer service department did. MBZ-USA will not retro fit the new head bolts on a car until the part fails. I would suggest a letter writing campaign to:
Mr. Ralph Fisher
Mercedes-Benz USA LLC
Customer Assistance Center
Three Mercedes Drive
Montvale, NJ 07645-0350
If you have actually experienced the problem, please pm me with your VIN and a copy of the warranty repair order. A copy of the reference to the service bulletin is attached. MBZ-USA will not give a copy of the bulletin to a customer.

there is no message regarding coolant levels for me... but i just noticed last weekend that there was some spilled coolant near the cap... my friend said it looked like someone opened it while it was hot... it sure wasn't me
is there a need to be concerned about this?

I'm not feeling to good about this issue. I have an 09 with 24K miles...needless to say, I won't be holding on to this car much longer. Even though I'm still covered under my CPO warranty through 2014...I don't even want be bothered with the potential headache this issue can cause.

took my car in for my 40k service, i also had them look to see if my car fell into the range of engines that may have this problem and although they found that my car does, my car doesn't show any signs or issues. my car is perfect in the techs words. so i'm hoping i'm the lucky one that has a car with no issues in that range

Get the extended warranty while you still can. The out of warranty dealer cost on this (assuming no engine damage when the head bolts fail) is close to $5k depending on were you live.

i still have about 9k miles until my warranty expires... i've had no coolant issues, no cel lights, no stalling issues...
are we saying that every car that was built using the older head bolts are going to fail?

MBZ official position is this is not going to happen to all M156 in the range (at least not within the warranty period) so they won't do a retrofit. If you don't intend on modding the car, I'd get the extended warranty. When you go to sell it, at least if a potential buyer raises the issue, you can show them you got the factory extended warranty.

I was just reading your post that I'm quoting while I was eating at a restaurant. I notice a man walk in that had just parked an SL63. So, as I'm walking out I say "nice car." He responds, "yeah, MB makes great cars." I asked, "have you heard about the head bolt issue?" He answers, "yeah, my SL broke a head bolt when it had 5,000 miles on it." He said they had to replace all the bolts and "shave" the head. Dealer told him the work, if it wasn't covered under warranty, would have been 16K. His car is on 09'. He said he noticed the car had an issue because of the coolant loss indicator light in the dash.
I guess this issue is fairly common.
