2009 ML63 with 72k miles, second owner, dealer maintained. Add coolant light came on. Topped off and took to dealer. They quoted $35,000 for a rebuild or $85,000 for a new motor.

take it to Buckhead Imports and ask for Jason(and of course tell him I sent you).....you are looking at prolly around $8k for them to do it.....i had them price out mine before i decided to do it myself and that price was including new buckets as well

Eurocharged Canada were pulling heads and replacing everything on the C63 for ~$3500CDN I believe. Don't think that included buckets so add another ~$1K.
$8k seems steep to me unless you need to yank the motor out in the ML like you do in the R?

i agree that it is ENTIRELY overpriced(which is why I did it myself) but in the Atl area that was the cheapest price I found, plus BHI is the best Indy shop and yes that was with them pulling the motor

Dealer and MBUSA say they will not provide any financial support for the repair at this time. Dealer says that MB wants to see what the problem is before they will weigh in on offering financial support.
What a nice position for MB...offer me a $35k repair estimate and then have me sign off on having the motor torn down and possibly removed before MBUSA will weigh in on their support. Which could be '$0', that seems to be too big a gamble to stomach.
72k mikes, every service done at an MB dealer, no codes or CEL - known TSB on head bolts - pretty weak for them to expect me to sign off on $35k estimate with no commitment from MB.
I'm sure the fact that this is my 6th Mercedes has no impact. Hate to say it may be my last. Shame cause my last AMG was sold running strong with 172k miles.

That's exactly what they told me. A money making opportunity rather than actually helping.
I still have to dump my old headbolts on the SA's desk and ask for a refund...

So did you have it towed off the lot to an independent mechanic, avoiding the disappointing and aggravating experience of even discussing further with MB dealer & MB Corp?

No, I changed them myself pre failure as preventative maintenance. That's what I got out of them asking if they'd assist in any way if I did have a failure outside of warranty.

Sell it to a dealership/person then buy mine.
