What causes this type of tire wear?

Front right tire separated on the inside edge. Would an alignment fix this excess/uneven wear ... or, is this 'normal'?

Thanks

From the pics it looks like you have wear on the outside edge indicating positive camber.

The separation appears to be on the inside edge

Doesn't make sense

What does the other front look like? Does the car pull to one side?

My best guess would be under inflated or a faulty tire/side wall. Contact the tire manufacturer.

Could be a camber or too much toe out.

Go to an alignment shop... Maybe you hit a hard bump/pothole on that side.

That's an awful lot of wear on the inside edge. My first thought was toe/camber, but from the looks of the affected area, it looks like it is wearing differently than the other parts of the tire in the first picture. Like the others have said, it's weird to see wear on both the inside and outside edges. It looks like the outside edge is wearing a little more than the tread, so I'd say its got a slightly positive camber.

Is the car lowered? The only other explanation I can think of is that the tire is contacting your suspension causing abnormal wear and separation...

on a somewhat related note...i got my tires changed yesterday. they wanted to do an alignment to fix the camber or something, because the two rear tires were worn on the insides. i told them i didn't want to mess with the camber setting. is this how it's supposed to be?

Lowered suspension + wider than standard tyres?? I would be suspicious the big strip that has been torn off is from the tyre coming into contact with lip of the mudguard/wheel arch eg from hitting a bump when cornering hard

It looks like a pot hole puncture, Or the belt shifted. If this tire was on the left side of the car its too much negative camber, if. It was on the right side, it would be too much positive camber. If you don't want bad wear on the tires you can ask them to align the car with a little less camber front and back, but it might effect the ride handle a bit

Thanks for the info so far.

Attached pic of the left front tire ... wearing the exact same way.

Tire pressure is at ~40 lbs.

All stock ... not lowered or any other changes to the suspension.

Tires have ~30K on them which I have been thinking is too good to be true (on 3rd set of rears) but have always just gone by the wear bars ... never looked at the inside of the tire ... lesson learned.

Thankfully I never lost pressure ... could have been ugly ... especially since i was taking advantage of some open road shortly before it separated.

Was in for service B ~ 2 months ago ... kind of surprised the severity of the wear wasn't mentioned.

Rear camber is not adjustable. Only rear toe-in is adjustable.

OP I think you may have toe-out on the front as mentioned and I would definitely get the alignment checked.

you paid for a 500$ service and from what I see they didn't check your tires. Impossible that they were close to ok 2 months ago unless you tracked the car or drove it pretty hard. And they tell you that you pay more (for what is basically an oil change) but it's for your security ....

BTW i have the exact same type of tire wear. it looks as if the inside portion was buffed or shaved at a 45 degree angle???

You are experiencing what many have. It is related to an aggressive camber setting and causes this type of wear. "Fortunately" I pinched a right rear on a bad driveway apron and blew the tire. When I pulled it off I was shocked to find the inside edge worn to the belts. I put on some P-Zero Neros which were crap. I changed to Pilot Super Sports and have yet to go have the alignment setup to minimize the camber and maximize tire life.

There are several threads about premature tire wear and alingment settings on the forums.

Regards,

Joe

I should clarify/correct my last response. It's actually the toe in that seems to impact the rapid overall tire wear, as the tires scrub as they roll. But I also feel the camber is having an impact on the inner areas.

Regards,

Joe

I hate to say this bro, but from the look of your last pic your gonna need front struts soon. If you run your hands over the tire and you get a wave like feel in your hand, then it's probably time for a change. It looks like your tire might be skipping (not full contact on the road). When you put the new tires on, have them check your struts.
