c63 on order...questions. SLS vs c63
Hey guys,
Been reading constantly about the 12/13 C63s. Have a 13 on order for European Delivery in Oct.
Few questions that I can't seem to find answers to:
1) SLS vs c63. What does the SLS have going on that makes so much more power? Our ordered c has the Development Package which has the SLS internals yet, not close on power. What gives?
2) Transmissions. I know the SLS uses the same trans as the Ferrari Californias and the 458s. Is the c63 Transmission the same as the SLS?
Thanks for any feedback.
TC

MBZ says its the intake and exhaust flow that limits the power of the C63 (P31). If this is true why are they able to get so much more power out of the C63BS which is basically the same car. The answer is they don't want the least expensive AMG to outperform the most expensive AMG. Most tuners can get about 50hp out of a base M156 in a C class, yet more modest gains out of a M156 in other AMG cars that start with more factory HP/TQ. Bottom line is the C63 is slightly detuned.

I get the diff in software...and I know that can be changed. But, the Sls still has 560 hp vs. a tuned c63 that has less than 520. What hardware diff are there between the Sls ans c63 and why can't we more or less bolt on the Sls bits and have the same results..?

On the top of my head, other than the forged internals which are availible on the p31, the SLS has different intake, exhaust manifold, camshafts, Valve train, and it has a dry sump oiling system. It's a lot different. The engine code is even different m156 vs m159 from the SLS.
The bore, stroke and compression remains the same though.
Transmission is different. SLS uses a true dual clutch transmission from getrag (with AMGs own software) like the ferraris you mentioned. The c63 transmission is Mercedes 7g tronic with a single wet start up clutch that's it. It's not nearly as fast as a dual clutch

MB should really consider DCT for all future AMG models. natman316 has pretty much named most of the differencse that contribute to the increased hp/tq. It's also obvious that the M156 in C63 is detuned. It's the same with the current 5.5l M157. Look at the much higher hp/tq in the S and SL class vs the E; similar trend when all those have the P30 package.
The new SLS BS will have possibly up to 650hp without the use of forced induction. Per AMG, it's all done via internal tweaks.

Most cars with over 100hp/ liter n/a tend to have to rev really high

SLS has P31 internals plus magnesium intake, velocity stacks, equal length headers and a dry sump oil system.
The transmission in the C63 and SLS are different.
12'+ C63's use a 7 speed auto without a torque converter. Instead, AMG has replaced it with a wet start clutch.
The SLS uses a true dual clutch transmission. Also has a carbon fiber drive shaft.

there is an interesting article floating around written by Chris Harris that goes into great detail regarding the SLS/ Ferrari Getrag trans.
Long story short, same trans with diff software. MB tunes the software so the trans will last...Ferrari does not. Ferrari tuned the software to shift faster etc. In doing so they are over stressing the internals. Anyway...google for the article...interesting stuff if you are a car nerd like me.
As far as the dual clutch trans installed in the c63. Yes, that would be great. You can be guaranteed that the next c63 with sport such tech. For us in day to day use it wont matter. I am sure we will rarely self shift as the auto as comes standard in the new c63s seems to be pretty sweet.
Besides, if I want to have fun with a paddle shifter...I have my Scuderia![Wink](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/wink.gif)
Thanks for all the help understanding the differences. You guys rock.
