Considering buying a 2008 C63 - Good idea?
Hey everyone, sorry but it's another one of those posts. I am looking at buying a 2008 C63 with about 70k miles on it. I love the car and the engine especially.
However, recently I have begun reading more about the issues with the M156 engine and the lawsuit, but I'm not sure what to make of it.
So far from reading the forums it seems like a very small number of people are having the issues. How many of you have higher mileage (50k+) C63's, and are you having any issues?
Are there any clear signs I should look for before buying the car that it may be having issues?
Thanks ahead of time!
EDIT: a little more information about the car from the CarFax Report shows that the radio, engine mounts and stabilizer bar links were all replaced already. Is this a good thing or a sign of trouble?

60K KM beat on since day one, no problems. Runs like a champ.
I dont see any problems with those fixes. Not sure why the mounts would be going already, but at least u will have new ones.

You have to put things into perspective too. The 'issue' isn't really that widespread. If it was, MB would've done a full recall already. so chances are the 08 C63 you are looking at will be fine.
Since you are in love with the engine, car, everything about the C63... go buy it and enjoy the rest of the summer with it It is an absolute joy to drive. And i use mine as a DD

Assuming the head bolt issue doesn't come up and the car has been properly maintained, you should be fine for a while. The AMG engines are very well built and reliable if you look past the head bolt issue. And based on the high mileage, the car probably was driven mostly on the freeway so there shouldn't be much abuse on the car.
If you are buying it at a Mercedes dealership, ask if they were the ones that performed the repair and if so, what prompted the repair.

I do 2500 miles a month with my car, mostly city driving. I don't think that any other CL was ever abused the way I'm treating my car!

48k on my 09. No issues except the inability to drive by gas stations without stopping.
I do not however plan to keep it after the warranty expires at 75k.

I'm curious as to what price you'd be buying it at. I bought my '08 with about 66.5k miles on it mid may and will officially be going past 70k miles tomorrow. i've only had the car a couple months, but haven't had any problems whatsoever.
also, it might be a coincidence, but the guy that i bought the car from literally only used it all as highway miles going from md to nj back and forth over the years. he never reset the "After Reset" trip meter thing and it had all 66k miles on there with an average of 19.6 mpg so it pretty much verified that story.

Call me paranoid but I'd be VERY wary of buying a car like this out of warranty. The potential costs for repairs/maintenance are pretty significant.

You can look into a 3rd party warranty if you are concerned. I frankly wouldn't own a benz without one but I know plenty of people who don't have one and never had an issue.

thanks for all the responses, I will be driving to Dallas tomorrow to get it!
( as long as there are no issues I find)
I am paying just shy of $36k.

Both my parents have 2008 and 2009 Mercedes and didn't have any issues yet (my dad's E550 is the same situation as the C63, a lease that went over on miles).
As a 25 year old, I plan on keeping this car for a LONG time. I need to start saving for a house, engagement ring and wedding in the next 3-4 years, so I will be keeping this car as my baby. It will be a while until I can afford to spend this much on a car again (even with raises and promotions, though let's hope I make it to the 15% bonus range this year!).

If it is this one, then yes (pretty sure it's the only C63 for $36k right now)
EDIT: oh and thanks, I've been annoying people because I can't stop talking about it. the 6.2L M156 has been one of my favorite engines for years. I can't wait to have it in my garage, waiting to take it out to tear up the streets.

Ya, I think the NADA and KBB are a bit higher. I was expecting to look for one once I got my raise and bonus next year, but when this came up, I did some math and it worked out, figured why wait? Like I said, I plan on keeping it for a long time, I've test driven a few and it was the only Mercedes that matches up the a BMW driving style.

By the way, once I get the car, I plan on spending a lot of time on this forum. I'm especially on seeing if 275's or 295's fit on the car, not to mention the best tuning. This will be my long term weekend car.
Thanks everyone for the help so far!

Btw, there is no way you'll be able to (safely) put 295s on this car. 275s are just about the biggest you can go without rubbing or significantly affecting handling. I think 265s are perfect on this car (I had this size on my 2010). I may try 275 Michelin Super Sports when my OEM tires are gone.

Yes, you can. There are a lot of threads in this forum that go into the details. Gives you more traction, but it will affect the handling a bit. Most of us don't drive the car at it's limits especially when cornering, so it may not affect you much. Lack of traction when launching the car is one of the biggest problems our cars have.
