We made markings with nail polish on the cams and original heads. The gears didn't come off the cams so used that for reference. Merc uses a pin system in the front which is a relatively simple device to make if some could find one to copy. The cam timing is something someone with vast experience should do without the Merc tool. The guy that is helping me didn't seem phased. I was very confused myself. Are you removing the cams on your car?

Ya I want to remove them and replace the head bolts one at a time with studs.

Im just trying to learn how the cams are lined up for timing... The stuff I have worked on always has dots or marks to line up the gears off the crank with the gears on the cams.

It just looks complicated with 4 cams. I guess I could just make my own marks on the cam and the head to line them back up how they came off.

Any idea how the cams are torqued back down from center outwards?

And I was afraid there weren't any on here that did their own wrenching!

I have a question on the cam timing. Isn't there any documentation around that shows cam timing in relation to the number 1 piston being at TDC? I would think a degree wheel would be the best way to insure cam timing. Sorry if this has been answered before but I've only been a owner for the last 3 weeks.

Because of the variable valve timing the variable cam gear, camshaft and piston has to be set in the right place simultaneously.

Being new to these engines, I guess I'm missing something. I have always thought if you locked the variable mechanism, you could degree the cam(s) in relation to the crank while having the number one piston at TDC.

In any event, great build thread!

Good news. We started the engine tonight. Everything sounds perfect motor wise which is everyone's feer. I got an initial video I will put up tomorrow. Very excited to start driving. My Star system is acting up and I need to reset transmission adaptions, fit air boxes, hood and bumper and the running in starts.

I got one and will put it to good use. Need to get some more mileage on so I can go full throttle and see what the boost is up here at altitude (5600ft). I may work with Weistec to get a altitude specific pulley for the normal stage 3 kit and then go for the higher boost pulley as per Jrcart and Ecampbell.
