Unocal won a lawsuit in California about 15 years claiming patent rights on gasoline above 91 octane. None of the refiners want to pay Unocal a royalty so they market 91 octane only. Thank Unocal for that.

FWIW Techron is sold by GM, Ford, Chrysler, BMW & MB as an intake cleaner under their own labels. They must have a high regard for it to do that.

I work at a refinery. The differences between gasoline brands have been pretty much eliminated by the California legislature. The only thing you're paying for now is the proprietary additives, i.e. Techron. Cheaper is better.
