I think you're right though, anything else is pretty much pointless and you might as well save up for a supercharger or look at reducing weight if you want to track it.
Maybe I shouldn't say pointless, but the gains vs cost is not going to be pretty.

For $3500 you can gain an additional 40-60 hp from headers and exhaust.
