So, the other day I went out and bought a can of black plastidip for my chrome trim. I also saw that they had a clear plastidip, and was toying with the idea of using it on my front bumper...much like the clear paint protection shield that the dealership and aftermarket companies do.

Has anyone attempted this, or know if it's possible to use as a 'paint shield?' I know that plastidip comes off paint easily so it may not work. But I also hear of people plastidiping the entire car (or is this a special type of plastidip?). Any input would be appreciated.

i'd be good for the winter ... keep the salt off the paint and you can peel it off come summer time! ... maybe even make it a matte color

Do a Google search on plasti-dip there is a guy who shows how to do an entire car, wheels, etc. His site also sells all the colors, sprayers etc. I was going to give it a shot but found a pretty good deal on the 3M stuff for the front of my car.

I did plasti-dip parts on my truck and it is pretty easy to get off once you want to remove it but pretty durable otherwise.

what would happen if you do the black plastidip than the clear plastidip ??? would the clear make it harder for it to come out???

driftmotion - True, but that means I'd have to clear plastidip the whole car. Not sure if I'm up for that. Lol.

SunSpot - I think I've seen that video, but I'll give him another search just to be more familiar with plastidiping the car. So you say the plastidip is pretty durable on the paint? And what 3M product did you use for your front? I might want to look into that too.

steven1888 - I think if you apply the clear right after the black coat it would just become one with the black coat. But not sure because I haven't tried it.

3M scotchgaurd but there are other brands as well you can search for clear bra and get some ideas. It is really a big clear sticker like the screen protector on your phone. If it is put on right you have to look hard to see it on a clean car.

The plastidip melds itself to each layer regardless of color, there is gloss, matte, metallic, and smoke that you can add to any color. I just used matte black on the truck and it has to be scraped/peeled off or you can use goof off to turn it into a liquid to clean off.

My issue with plastidip is that it rock chips like anything else and fixing it without a hard edge is near impossible.

I've seen a few cars dipped white and they looked horrible in person, haven't seen any other colors.

I clear bra is the way to go if you are looking for paint protection. Plastidip was not designed for that... and does not provide protection from rocks.

clear plastidip sounds like a pretty good idea for areas that often get abused like behind the wheels or the lower lip area. It does have a rubbery finish to it that attracts dust and lint though.
