Can you get me the engine number for this one please? So when I got the engine number, how do I check for head bolt problem? Thanks.

Well the first thing you do is figure out what engine is in your car. Is it an M156... No. Then full stop.Originally Posted by dustinN

Thank you sir. That's what I thought. Only M156 has head bolt issue, not on M157. I asked for common issue in M157 in M157 forum and a member has mentioned about the head bolt and cams issues in M157. That surprised me.Originally Posted by Valvestud

the car you’ve provided a VIN for is a C300, not C63. As such, head bolts are not an issue. Originally Posted by Kha Moe

Ok so it’s definitely affected. The car has over 135k miles, drives so strong, no check engine or any codes, and no coolant messages! Is there anyway it would pass 135k miles without being done?? Is there anyway to know if they’re done or not!
what’s the estimate price for such a repair job

The only way to check is to pull the valve cover and inspect the top of the bolts.Originally Posted by Kha Moe

-If the tops are hollow-torx, they are the original at-risk design.
-If the tops are external-torx, they have been replaced with the updated design.
It's very possible they are original at that mileage. There are cases of 200K+ miles on at-risk bolts without issue and failures at 20K miles. If they haven't failed yet, then the question becomes how much do you value peace of mind.
As for cost, shop around in your area. The 1-by-1 replacement method has a track record on here of working and there are mechanics out there who will utilize this (figure around $2K or less). The top shops recommend the factory procedure of pulling the heads, which will cost twice that or more.

Hi, I'm looking to purchase a 2011 C63. The VIN # is WDDGF7HB9BF602574 and engine model 156985 60 064039.
Is this car in the affected range of headbolt issues? Thanks

You should be good. The TSB data indicates the issue affects all M156 engines, up to serial number 569xx 60 060658 and you're engine is well beyond this.

Engine: 15698560057153.
Again, all 2010 and older are in the affected group. Last 5 digits of engine number need to be 60658 or higher.
