Extended Factory Warranty Denial
This is also what I was told by my dealer in NorCal, and I bought the ELW. Can't imagine but maybe this is a CA thing only as there are so many different opinions........
If you want the MB extended warranty, the only time it is offered is at the time of sale. Doesn't matter if you are 3rd or 5th owner. If it is declined at the time of sale at the "stealership", you will not be able to walk back in and purchase. It is one of the ways MB and CPO cars try to remain in-house and taken care of. Once it has been out of their hands, you will not be able to "join the club".
You will have to seek out a third party warranty. There is no option for you to pick-up the factory warranty. Other than the original term left/granted to you upon purchase of your CPO. You can still cover your car, maybe just not in the manner that you prefer.

Please go to this link:
http://www.mbusa.com/mercedes/servic...parts/warranty
And click on the ELW drop down.
Other than the original warranty still being in force, there is no language related to who one buys a car from or whether or not it's CPO. My local Tucson dealer will sell me ELW for my C or ML anytime I like.
I cannot imagine why there are so many versions in the wild about what a dealer will or won't do. Seems to me they would love to sell them every chance they get.
Regards,
Joe

this is not true. you just have to pay a surcharge if you're not buying it at purchase.

-If you are the original owner, no problem so long as it's before the 4 years or 50k Miles.
-If you buy private party (2nd owner) then it's OK (same as above)
-If you buy as CPO, you can buy at point of sale - then no problem
-If you buy at a dealer (non MB dealer / or at MB dealer but non CPO) as a 2nd owner, you are S-O-L.
This last point doesn't make any sense to me. I think I will take it up with MBUSA.
One final point, some forum members may be under the impression that their dealership is offering them the MB ELW but it's really a 3rd part after-market warranty. Just food for thought.
I have been pretty busy with work lately but when I have time I will look into this further with MBUSA. I'll let you know how it turns out.
