Ticking/Flutter at Idle/Low RPM...Normal?

Hi all,

I feel like this subject has been discussed on and off with some of it being normal and some of it actual being a serious problem. So forgive me if this issue has been addressed, but I was unable to find my exact symptoms when searching.

All this developed within the last 6 months.

Here are the symptoms doc. Is something wrong or am I just crazy?
  1. Ticking occuring at idle (lifters?/both in Park and while driving)
  2. Flutter during light throttle (both in Park and while driving)
  3. Occasional throttle hesitation when revving in Park
  4. Ticking and flutter increase with RPM (both in Park and while driving)
  5. No CEL
  6. Seems to lessen once engine is at full operating temp
  7. Some days it is louder/more noticable than others
  8. Tech did not notice anything abnormal when he listed to it (albeit, I was not present to point our the exact noises that concerned me. I personally have noticed the change in sound within the last 6 months).
  9. Mods are K&N filters, Charcoal Delete, Eurocharged Tune, GT Pro X-Pipe
  10. 2009 car with 22k miles
Thank you all for your time and help. I realize this seems to occur frequently in our cars and the concern to me is the fine line between what is considered "normal" and what could be a more serious issue. I did try to record an audio clip on my iPhone, but I cannot capture the exact sound I'm hearing that concerns unfortunately.

I believe I know what you're describing. I experience most of these symptoms except the throttle hesitation when revving in Park. I could discern some ticking, particularly on cold start up and sometimes after the car reached running temps when idling...the sound was sublte, but I could feel the ticking through the steering wheel...never knew what it was. I ended up trading the car in because I was paranoid about the head bolt issue.

Thanks for your reply. That is exactly what I am concerned about. My warranty is up in July and I'm wondering if it is just a ticking timebomb at this point. If so, I'd rather sell the car now while the warranty still has some value.

they all have that tick. almost like its a background noise in the engine bay. very subtle. most people don't even notice.

I do understand that, but mine either developed or has gotten significantly worse in the last 6 months or so. It has not always been like this. That's really what my concern was about. If it had been like this since I first bought the car with 600 miles on it, then I agree and would chalk it up to that.
