I'm pretty sure I know what the problem is, but I dont have X-Ray vision to see the upper workings of the cylinder head.

The things is the car is under warranty. So it's best to just let the dealer take of the problem. I posted this more for documentation in case others run into the same problem.

I've had this happen with other makes. Sounds like a spoon inside a garbage disposer. What happened is that one, or more lifters bled down and collapsed. The dealer upgraded the oil to a higher viscosity and the problem never reappeared.

My 02 Clk55 with 75k+ miles sometimes has ticking sounds. I guess its normal for these AMG engines.

Just get a supercharger and the problem should subside.

Same sounds my car is making. Dealer can't reproduce of course. In my case it comes and goes but is there 90% of the time on a cold start and returns randomly throughout the day. See if the ticking/clicking noise increases as you increase the RPM and let me know. Thx!

I got my car back because the dealer could not duplicate the sound. The sound goes away after the car is warmed up. To me it sounds like a lifter bleeding down. Once the car is up to temp problem is gone. It only happened that one time.

IF it happens again. I will shoot a video again. and have the car towed to the dealer. This way they can pull the valve cover off and check to see what exactly is going on. While the lifter is stuck. I'd advise others to do the same. If you hear it. Just turn the car off and get it towed. Bring it in cold, dont give your engine a chance to fix the problem. Once it fixes itself you will never know what one was doing it. So basically the dealer has to catch it in the act.

That's normal. They all do that. Unable to duplicate any warrantable concern. lol

Here we go again

Today I was getting ready to leave. I started the car up and the sound was back. Rather than drive the car (Driving seems to fix the problem and the sound goes away). I called road side for a tow. 2 hours later the flat bed shows up and took the car and myself to the dealer.

This time I'm pretty sure they were able to hear the racket coming from the valves area. I got a text from my friend who is the service manager at the dealership. I was told they are removing the valve covers first thing in the morning and they should know more once they see whats going on.

Here is the video from this morning.

I heard a brand new SLS sitting on the dealer's lot ticking away two weeks ago. I asked them if there was a discount for the new car that needs engine work and they just laughed.

Make sure you video the sound. Or when it is doing it also just have it towed to the dealer. The problem may fix itself if you drive. Thats what you DONT want. You want the dealer to hear it. So when it does it just get it towed.

My issue is fixed and has been trouble free since. They replaced 6 lifters or something like that.

Vegas, that is great advice considering your warranty situation. It'd be well worth the ~$125 for a flatbed.

MBH Motorsports,
Good to hear you are problem free now but can you tell us actually how many miles did you have on the oil change ( 0-40 Mobil) or (5w-40 Mobil) the first time of the tick issue. Did the car sit or has it sat for long periods of time, like weeks or months.
Thanks in Advance
