This doesn't sound good

On my 2010 C63 with 17,880 miles on it. I started it up and heard this. Just posting so there is an online record of it and others can compare their sound to mine. My car is 100% stock.

Could this be the dreaded head bolt issue? How's coolant and oil level?

Best case scenario ... bad belt pulley or waterpump? Just guessing here, though it really sounds like metal on metal from the video.

Now that you mention that one of my idler pulleys on my E55 went bad and sounded a lot like that.. I totally forgot. It sounded metal on metal similar to that.

Sounds like something bouncing around the cylinders.

The car is at the dealer now. People should record stuff like this (strange noises.) You hear all to often that the dealer can't get the car to make the sound again. So having a video helps. I the service manager and in turn they showed a tech. Now its a waiting game. It wasn't doing later in the day. So it might be a cold start up thing. I'll be sure to keep you guys posted.

I've had just about every pulley on my old 55's go, this one for sure is coming from the drivers side head.

hopefully you can get it sorted out. hard to tell from the video but if it was a pully or belt you would think it would be more of a squeak. this sounds like it's inside the engine (at least to me) in the video. hopefully not a lifter...do our engines use tappets ? could have broken the top off a tappet , that would make a noise like this

Cam adjusters can get really noisy like that.

Could also be a lifter stuck.

My 09 C63 with 27k miles did have the same noise when it hasnt been driven for a long time. Or mostly sitting. Also check the oil level is full.

Have you been topping off with 0w40? I heard this after topping off a coue times with 0w40. As soon as I heard it, I shut her off. After adding 5w40 it went away.

LOL, I see where you are coming from. Honestly I've got nothing done yet. Every time I have a set of headers build for me. Someone needed them yesterday. So I get back burnered a lot. I can get a tune any time I want, but I dont want to make my friend do twice the work and re-tune when I put my headers on. Even my friend who is the Service manager at my MB dealer ask me "so what do you have a program and stuff on your car?" I'm like, "nope, I got nothing. Bone stock."

Mod will be coming soon.

Why? The 0w-40 has a better set of wear inhibitors. They changed to 5w-40 because the reduction in wear inhibitors increases the life of the catalytic converter which has a much longer warrantee.

I know.. just busting your bearings..

Our cars should stand up to a tune..
Most of the tunes are built on a strong foundation and only mirrors close to the standard 6.3 setup.

mb did not detune our engines because they could not handle it..
They detuned them to justify the brand separation / cost of the older brothers.

unfortunately if things go wrong they would rather point at us.
my dealer gave me crap with my GPS not syncing because i had a brabus upgrade.. needless to say i got a new dealer.

I bought my wive a x3 3.5 and bumped it from 320 to 410 with a plug in module.. now i truly expect **** to go wrong with hat car if I had it as my daily driver because I know I will break it. It was not meant for that. That engine was not meant to do that, On the other hand.. our drivetrain, gearbox and engine was built for 507hp.. we cant put it down but it was built for that..

I hope you get it sorted.. as i can only imagine how scrappy it feels without your baby

Here's mine when it was bone stock also

Car sat for a week and when I cranked it the first time it made that sound. I turned it off and then back on. Sound went away.

Stuck lifter like others said.

I'm at 71k miles now and I never brought the car in to the dealer even after hearing that noise.

LIFTERS.

0w40 is too thin at startup and bleeds out.

Where is the zddp listed of 0w40 and 5w40?

I use amsoil myself.
