Panoramic Roof Glass Shattered
I was one 280 near South San Francisco going speed limit, out of nowhere I hear a loud crack sound.
Parked at the office parking lot, had a meeting then remembered to check if there are any damages on bumper (assuming). Lo and behold the front part of my panoramic roof is shattered. What a great start to a sunny Friday....
My deductible is $500 bucks too. I'm only asking you guys now because I can't be on phone at work to get quote....
-Does anyone know what it will cost???
-Will warranty cover it? (dumb question)

wow! thats a nasty crack. what did you hit? did you get struck by a meteor. i think the damage should be covered under comprehensive. i had an accident few months and hit some debris on the freeway. got it repaired by Mark who owns federal auto body in concord.

I would pursue it under warranty. If nothing has hit it then it looks like it has cracked ? due to the body of the car flexing over bumps etc, which it should be able to withstand.

The exact same thing just happened to my 2008 C350 pano. Came out to the car and saw an almost identical crack across the entire front part of the roof. No impact points at all. That picture above could be my car. I have the extended warranty and I'm going to take it down to MB tomorrow and see what they think. It is clearly a defect. Nothing hit the glass at all.

Just thank god the whole thing did not shatter on your head/passengers. But definitely check warranty and then insurance. But yeah, glass roof on a track car sounds like a stupid idea..

What Happened??
I had the same thing happen to my car last weekend and I wasn't even driving...just walked out to my car and there it was, exactly like your picture (I think it is due to direct sun/105 heat).
Dealership is not going to repair bc my warranty expired and I have to now go through my insurance. I would have thought this would be covered under my glass coverage but Geico is making me go through a collision claim. I hope it doesn't effect my premium.
Did you go through insurance to get repair?

My parents have a 13' ML, exact same thing happened. Good luck getting the dealer to cover under warranty. They will say it cracked from some sort of impact. Myself personally i think they crack from the chassis flexing.

You guys should exchange pictures and take them the to the NTSFA to file a complaint, this is a complete failure of safety tempered glass. There appears to be no contact damage from being hit as everyone has stated. An accident would be expected if this failure occurs while driving the vehicle and everyone is lucky no injuries have been reported in the thread. Complain and complain loud, your insurance will pay but MBUSA should be contacted also with threat of legal proceedings if they ignore you. Good Luck and glad no one was hurt.

The cracks do not shock me. My roof creaks loud over uneven driveway ramps , speed bumps......did you guys here those loud creaks over spped bumps and such before your crack ???

You won't find an impact point. Typically, a rock chip weakens the glass, and the pressure differential at highway speeds blow it up just like that. Happens all the time to every model car sunroof and pano roof.
The trick is to get the headlight/foglight 3m film applied to the sunroof/pano roof glass area. This will help a bit with rock chips by lessening the impact and strengthen the glass a bit so it won't crack as easily from pressure differentials. If it does shatter, the film will hold all the glass in place so it doesn't bomb you with glass shards.
I've had this done on all my cars for over 10 years now and have never shattered a roof. We have a huge problem with road stones due to the city spraying it down during winters, I have to replace a windshield yearly but never a sun or pano roof.

There should be a inter layer film embedded in the pano roof already to prevent it shattering in the cabin
I can see getting a laminate film on top to help prevent rock chips and also offer some sort of sun protection

This was a problem on some E9X 335i BMWs.
It's not caused by objects hitting the glass, etc.
It's caused by external/internal pressure differential.

It always starts with the glass being weakened by an object hitting the glass. I suggest everyone go check their sunroofs and pano roofs for small rock chips when you get a chance.

I'm with you on this. IT"S NOT CAUSED BY OBJECTS HITTING THE GLASS - IT'S STRESS. I have no chips, cracks, spots on my 4000 mile car's roof. The roof makes some REALLY bad noises as the chasis flexes, and I'm worried it's going to do this. I've gotten out several times to look and thankfully nothing. I've seen this on the forums a few times and am pretty sure dealers have covered this more than once.
Between the inadequate sun protection, weight, and fagile nature I wish I didn't have a Pano.
