Crack in my Forgestar F14

Went out to wash the car today and found a crack through a spoke on my right rear wheel. No curb rash and no potholes, so no idea how it happened. I called and emailed Forgestar so guess we'll see what they say. Sucks because I don't have the stock wheels to put back on in the mean time.

Few more photos if you're interested: http://s7.photobucket.com/user/heyda...racked%20Wheel

Just checked, 1520 lb load rating. On the plus side, my fiance' successfully showed me she can change a tire all by herself.

Ouch.

Are these powder-coated or were they refinished by any chance?

There was a discussion a few days ago about failures in another brand of wheels, and one of the things that came out was that powder-coating at an incorrect temperature can significantly weaken the wheel structure. If the barrel was bent it would be easy to dismiss it as a pot hole hit, but a broken spoke is something else. It could be metal fatigue if you've been regularly tracking the car, but I wouldn't expect to see this on a street-driven vehicle unless the wheel was structurally compromised. I have bent and broken my fair share of wheels and then some, but it was always the hub.

was about to pull the trigger on some forgestars...is something like this covered? or do you have to come out of pocket for a new wheel?

Please do tell what Forgestar says. I'm considering a set of CF10's in 20" as an inexpensive way to get into a wheel that I would only use for a few weeks a year. So many here seem to have Forgestars though, if it were an "issue" perhaps we'd have heard more about it?

I'm hoping it was just a one off thing. I've never heard of it happening before with Forgestar. And no, these aren't refinished. Just the standard matte black option. I'll post up as soon as I hear from Forgestar. They're closed for the weekend of course, so I'm assuming I'll get some kind of reply on Monday. I called them and left a message at 5:30 last night and emailed them shortly after.

Good luck with your situation. I do hope you get some recompense for your aggravation. When researching aftermarket wheels not long ago for my own purchase, I came across Forgestar. Some of their wheel designs were pretty good. However, I disliked the fact they have "Forge" in their name when in fact their wheels are not forged. They're "flow formed" whatever that means. Their website explains the process.

Second, and this was the main reason I decided against ever purchasing Forgestar wheels, I came across two other instances where Forgestar F14 wheels cracked when I did my search a few months ago. According to the posters, they were not curb hopped nor was their any impact to a large crater or pot-hole. Similar to the OP's situation. A Google search will show a few unhappy Forgestar F14 customers.

Again, good luck to the OP and hope you get this resolved satisfactorily.

That was more my worry about Forgestars based on what I've heard...the quality of the finish.

No, the wheel was just still wet. I took the pics right after I washed the car and noticed the crack.

Yeah, it's definitely not all that great. It's not horrible, but compared to my last of matte black wheels it's pretty low quality. Never seems to get totally clean. Then again, these were 1/2 the cost, which may be the problem.

Their finishing is definitely not the best. That crack is pretty serious and definitely dangerous. Check out this thread that I made a while back. Customer brought me the wheels and all four wheels were peeling.

Wish I could send you a set of wheels but I doubt it would make sense from SoCal. Looks like you do great work.

google "forgestars cracked"

That will garner a few other forums. Ex. 1addicts, e90s, audizine, 6speedonline, etc

Im not saying they are a bad wheel company but the same saying goes "you pay for what you get"

Im sure there are some cracked wheels here and there for any wheels but more for forgestars

Yes! Actually, I got a very good resolution. Peter called and left me a voice mail yesterday morning stating straight away they were going to replace the wheel. I sent him some additional photos, but he offered to replace it before I even had the chance to talk to anyone. They have to make the wheel, so that part sucks because it's 2-3 weeks out, but I understand that. I'll follow up in a few weeks if for some reason it gets delayed, but so far so good. The fact that it cracked at all is still a little unsettling, but I can't complain about the company at this point. That's definitely the right way to handle the situation.
