While there is good news, he still has a long way to go, best wishes to him and his family.

"The situation is better under control than yesterday," Payen told reporters. "We cannot say that he is out of danger, but we've gained a little time in his development. But the hours to come are hours that are crucial in our strategy."

!I do understand the adrenaline of exploring unknown areas while skiing (we all at some point try to push our limits no matter if it's sport/work or personal life) but sometimes the price to pay can be fatal.
I hope he'll get better and better. My prayers go to him and his family.
hors piste means unmarked, not dangerous
he had stopped to help someone, and when he restarted he hit a snow covered rock and fell onto a rock...it was such a slight fall no one thought he was hurt
he's been skiing since he was young child
His manager, Sabine Kehm, recounted more details Tuesday of how the accident happened, gleaned from friends and family members who were present at the time.
The party was skiing in an area of deep snow when Schumacher helped a friend who had fallen, she said. As he set off again and went to make a turn, he seems to have hit a rock hidden under the snow. This catapulted him into the air and he fell head down with all his weight onto another rock, she said, resulting in severe injuries to his head.
Schumacher was not traveling fast at the time, Kehm said, so those with him were initially shocked by how badly he was hurt. "It's not a question of speed but of the angle that you hit the rock," she said.
He was wearing a helmet and, by all accounts, skiing well within his capabilities. The accident was widely seen as pure bad luck.
The resort’s director, Olivier Simonin, said where Schumacher was skiing – though not an official trail – was not a particularly difficult area, but there could have been rocks hidden by an earlier snow fall.

Also, a journalist disguised as a priest tried to access Michael Schumachers hospital room.

So much can happen in just a few seconds, it makes you feel lucky for every moment you have with loved ones.
All the best to Schumi and his family during this terrible time!
i knew a guy once who barely fell off his bike, just went over the handlebars and landed weird at very low speeds too...now he's a quadriplegic, like someone said above it's not about speed sometimes..hopefully he recovers fast

although the accident happened off-piste he was not back country skiing or anything like that...
he was on an easy rated slope and a friends child got stuck off that slope in an ungroomed area between the easy and an intermediate slope
Schumi went to help, was going slow, hit a rock and was catapaulted head first into another rock, a freak accident
if he had been going the 40 to 60 mph (60-90 ft/sec) some have claimed he would be dead...his head would be shoved between his shoulders and he'd have a broken neck and spine...I don't think he even has a skull fracture, and he hit directly on the top of his head with full body weight...it's a miracle he survived as is
his helment was shattered...
